This vacancy is in the Water Division of the Gas and Water Department. The Utilities Equipment Operations series includes three levels: Utilities Equipment Operator I, Utilities Equipment Operator II, and Utilities Senior Equipment Operator. Employees operate equipment used to excavate, construct, maintain, and repair underground utility infrastructure, including water, sewer, and gas systems. Depending on level, work may include operating backhoes, rubber-tire loaders, dump trucks, vacuum trucks, jet wash trucks, and CCTV equipment; locating underground utilities; maintaining equipment and utility components; and performing manual labor. Operator II and Senior Operator roles also coordinate equipment-operator activities, prepare materials and equipment, prioritize and assign work, and help ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations. Senior Operators perform mechanical and hydro excavation and backfilling near existing utilities and structures, including high-voltage electrical infrastructure and high-pressure gas lines. All levels establish traffic or safety controls around work areas and help protect employees and the public. The position requires heavy physical work, including lifting and moving objects, climbing, balancing, crouching, kneeling, standing, walking, and using hand and arm movements. High school graduation or a GED and one year of experience operating heavy construction equipment, vacuum trucks, jet wash trucks, and related equipment are listed for each level. Driver’s license, commercial driver’s license, certification, and additional experience requirements vary by level.
