About The Position

This is a series of three levels for Utilities Equipment Operators, responsible for operating equipment used in the excavation, construction, and maintenance of underground utilities. Responsibilities include operating various heavy equipment, excavating and repairing underground lines, maintaining equipment, locating underground utilities, and ensuring safety standards are met. The roles are located in the Water Division of the Gas and Water Department.

Requirements

High school graduate or GED equivalent.
One (1) year of experience operating heavy construction equipment, vacuum trucks, jet wash trucks, and related equipment.
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Position may require obtaining a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License typically within the first 6 months of employment.
Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in constructing, maintaining, and repairing City utilities systems.
Knowledge of manual labor and safe work methods.
Skill in utilizing applicable tools and equipment.
Skill in performing routine maintenance and repair functions on equipment and facilities.
Communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange or convey information and receive work direction.
Ability to perform heavy work requiring exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Ability to balance, climb, crouch, feel, finger, grasp, hear, kneel, lift, make rational decisions, pull, push, reach, perform repetitive motions, speak, stand, stoop, talk, and walk.

Nice To Haves

Position typically requires one of the following for Utilities Equipment Operator II: TN Grade 2 Water Distribution Systems Operator Certification OR TN Grade 2 Wastewater Collection Systems Operator Certification OR Three (3) years of experience in water distribution/wastewater collection construction (in lieu of one Certification).
Position typically requires one or two of the following for Utilities Senior Equipment Operator: TN Grade 2 Water Distribution Systems Operator Certification OR TN Grade 2 Wastewater Collection Systems Operator Certification OR Three (3) years of experience in water distribution/wastewater collection construction in lieu of each Certification (Six years total experience in lieu of any Certification).

Responsibilities

Operate equipment necessary for maintenance of water/sewer/gas infrastructure, including back-hoes, rubber-tire loaders, large dump trucks, vacuum trucks, jet wash trucks, and CCTV equipment.
Perform maintenance on various utilities equipment/parts such as hydrants, valves, water mains, taps, and sewer mainlines.
Install and repair utilities equipment.
Perform daily inspections and maintenance on heavy equipment, dump trucks, trailers, and various other equipment.
Locate underground utilities in cases of excavation.
Set up traffic safety controls around work areas and ensure the safety of coworkers and the public.
Perform slope excavations and understand OSHA line standards for employee entry into trenches.
Coordinate utilities equipment operator activities, including preparing materials and equipment for jobs, prioritizing and assigning work, and ensuring compliance with standards and regulations.
Safely perform mechanical and/or hydro excavation and backfilling in proximity to existing utilities without causing damage.
Cut and repair various types of paving.
Perform manual labor as required.
