The Urban Planner provides strategic leadership in the planning, design, and implementation of urban development initiatives. The Urban Planner oversees complex planning projects, guides multidisciplinary teams, and collaborates with public agencies, private stakeholders, and community members to shape sustainable, equitable, and resilient urban environments.

Requirements

  • 4+ years’ of experience professional planning experience, including leadership or project management responsibilities
  • Experience working in high-growth engineering organizations preferred
  • Strong knowledge of land-use planning, zoning codes, development review, and urban policy
  • Successful project management experience
  • Excellent communication and team leadership skills
  • Ability to self-direct and work independently as well as in a highly collaborative team environment
  • Strong understanding of urban design principles and their application.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the development of strategy, design, and implementation of projects, people, and programs
  • Team-player, positive and engaged contributor to the team, willingness to learn and adapt to business needs
  • Proficiency with planning and design tools (e.g., GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCad, or similar)
  • Lead with integrity while producing high quality work
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience
  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Design, Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or similar degree from an accredited program

Nice To Haves

  • Professional certification AICP or similar preferred
  • Master’s degree is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Develops community master plans, comprehensive plans, and strategic plans
  • Leads and manages comprehensive, area, and site-specific planning projects from concept through implementation
  • Develops and reviews master plans, zoning regulations, land-use policies, and urban design guidelines
  • Conducts and oversees research, data analysis, and scenario modeling to inform planning decisions
  • Facilitates public engagement processes, workshops, and stakeholder meetings
  • Prepares and presents reports, policy recommendations, and visual materials to clients
  • Ensures compliance with local, regional, and national planning regulations and best practices
  • Integrates sustainability, climate resilience, equity, and mobility considerations into planning outcomes
  • Facilitates public meetings and conducts technical research
  • Assist with budget reviews and schedule progress reports
  • Coordinate with clients and attend client meetings
  • Assists with business development efforts and proposal development
