About The Position

Northwest Youth Corps is seeking young people aged 19-26 for an AmeriCorps Crew Member position focused on Urban and Community Forestry (UCF). This jobs-training and educational opportunity involves working outdoors to improve urban forests in underserved areas of the South Puget Sound. Crew members will work with a team of four other members and one crew leader on projects such as tree planting and maintenance, wildfire fuels mitigation, invasive plant management, and tree surveying. Experienced field staff provide training and education on all projects. The work is physical and rigorous, performed in various weather and terrain conditions using hand and power tools. A key focus is building leadership and cooperation within the team. Prior experience is not necessary, as all training is provided, but maturity, teamwork, and openness to new challenges are vital.

Requirements

  • Aged 19-26 years old at enrollment.
  • US citizenship or permanent residency.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification, or ability to obtain before participation.
  • Ability to arrive on time at the pre-designated meeting point.
  • Maturity, teamwork, and openness to new challenges.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicants in good physical condition, capable of working long hours on strenuous, labor-intensive projects are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Complete urban forest health projects.
  • Participate in tree planting and maintenance.
  • Engage in wildfire fuels mitigation.
  • Conduct invasive plant management.
  • Perform tree surveying.
  • Work with a team of four other members and one crew leader.
  • Utilize a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Make up all missed days to complete the service term.

  • Training may cover Brush Cutter Operation and Maintenance, Wood Chipper Operation, Driver and Trailer Use (select members only), Tool Use and Maintenance, Native and Invasive Species Identification, Forestry Education (Tree Identification, Proper Tree Planting and Maintenance, Common Health Issues in Trees, Surveying Techniques), and OSHA Training.
