About The Position

Holy Innocents Episcopal School seeks a full-time Upper School Religion Teacher to begin in August 2026. The successful candidate will teach five sections of core departmental offerings, Biblical Studies (10 th and 11 th grade) and World Religions (11 th and 12 th grade), and will serve as advisor to an advisory of approximately 1015 students during their Upper School years. The successful candidate will also be expected to collaborate with the religion department chair, religion faculty, and HIES chaplains to review, develop, and improve religion department curriculum. As an Episcopal school that places emphasis on the spiritual health of its students, Holy Innocents expects its faculty to affirm and uphold the tenets of our Episcopal identity and mission statement in all aspects of their work. Upper School Religion classrooms at Holy Innocents are therefore inclusive spaces, welcoming students of all backgrounds and religious orientations, inviting them to explore their own religious orientations, and facilitating encounters with traditions different from their own. Faculty in the Upper School Religion Department are therefore expected to model inclusivity, compassion, and kindness in their teaching practice. The ideal candidate will be both committed to inclusive pedagogy and will have demonstrable experience establishing and maintaining a welcoming classroom environment. Strong candidates for the position will have at least two (2) years experience teaching in the humanities and a Bachelors degree in religion or a related discipline in the humanities. The ideal candidate will have experience and/or education in the academic study of religions and biblical literature, preferably in an independent, secondary school setting. The ideal candidate should also have interest in pursuing opportunities for engagement with extra-curricular student life at HIES, and strong candidates will have demonstrated experience engaging students outside of the classroom (e.g., in student clubs, coaching sports teams, and/or service-learning experiences). Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Religion, History, Social Sciences, or a related subject in the humanities is required; Masters degree and/or teaching certification preferred.
  • At least two (2) years experience teaching humanities is required; experience teaching humanities in an independent secondary school setting is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience or education in the areas of religion and/or biblical literature.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and professionally with administrative supervisors, colleagues, students, and parents of students.
  • The ability to receive and implement feedback on pedagogy and classroom management from administrative supervisors.
  • The ability to effectively establish and maintain an inclusive, supportive classroom environment for students of diverse backgrounds, identities, and learning profiles.
  • The ability to affirm and uphold the tenets of Holy Innocents Episcopal identity and mission statement in all aspects of their work.

Responsibilities

  • Teach five (5) sections of core religion courses (Biblical Studies and World Religions) in an Upper School classroom setting.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that adhere to Upper School Religion Department curriculum.
  • Collaborate with religion department chair, religion colleagues, and HIES chaplains to review and revise religion curriculum.
  • Maintain accurate student academic records and performance metrics as directed by the religion department chair.
  • Communicate regularly with students, students parents, faculty colleagues, and administrative supervisors/deans regarding student progress.
