The Upper School Counselor manages student 504 plans and meetings in accordance with federal law and the OPS 504 Handbook. This role provides direct support services to individual students, small groups, and classrooms, including completing assessments, referrals, and counseling with students and families. The counselor is responsible for creating student schedules in conjunction with school leadership, monitoring individual student progress towards promotion and graduation, and ensuring the accuracy of transfer records and transcripts. Additionally, the role involves leading the maintenance of student cumulative folders and the distribution of report cards. The Upper School Counselor will develop and maintain a comprehensive school counseling program and plan, support the transitions of new students to the school and from Lower School to Upper School, and connect community resources and programs to students/parents to meet individualized student needs. For Upper School students, this position supports college applications, builds relationships with colleges/universities, plans group college campus visits, develops and delivers curriculum for senior and junior seminar courses, assists seniors with financial aid packages, and meets with students and parents during the college advising process. The counselor also works with the Vance-Granville Community College liaison regarding academic performance, instructor communications, student grievances, and scheduling CCP courses, providing support to students struggling in CCP classes.
