This is a non-merit internship position. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of Family Well-Being & Protection (FWB&P), Child Protective Services, is seeking a Social Work Intern for the Des Moines Service Area based out of the Warren County HHS (111 N. Buxton Street, Indianola, IA 50125) covering Indianola and surrounding areas. The internship period is for Spring 2027. The application period is until filled, with the posting closing on October 15th at the latest. The schedule is to be determined with a supervisor and school, typically Monday-Friday between 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, with flexibility structured with supervisory approval. There may be opportunities for after-hours experience if requested. Mileage reimbursement of $0.50/mile is provided if your own vehicle is used. A background check is required. As an Unpaid Social Work Intern in the Family Well-Being & Protection Division, you’ll work alongside Case Managers and potentially Child Protective Workers with families, helping them navigate challenges and build stronger, safer futures. Internship opportunities typically involve working with Child and Family Service Case Managers, with potential opportunities to observe parts of the Child Protection Worker role. A Child & Family Service Case Manager's primary focus is providing ongoing case management and support services to families after the initial assessment phase, preparing and supporting children and families to be successful, and connecting them to community resources. A Child Protection Worker's primary focus is conducting initial assessments in response to reports of child abuse or neglect, requiring multitasking and the ability to gather and analyze evidence accurately and efficiently.
