About The Position

The Princeton University Department of Public Safety (DPS) is seeking to hire a University Police Officer. This is a sponsored position where the department will cover the costs of New Jersey police academy tuition, uniforms, and equipment for a successful candidate. Cadets earn a salary during the academy according to the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) contract. Candidates with current New Jersey Police Officer Certification or approval from the New Jersey Training Commission may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. DPS is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment at Princeton University, operating 24/7 with 153 staff members including police officers, security officers, dispatchers, and administrators. DPS has achieved accreditation from CALEA and NJLEAC, signifying adherence to rigorous public safety standards. Sworn University Police Officers possess full arrest powers under New Jersey statutes and the Trustees of Princeton University, similar to municipal police officers, and must complete the same training and annual requirements. While typically unarmed, officers may access a service rifle in specific high-threat situations. The department consists of 46 sworn officers across various ranks.
