About The Position

The Unit Secretary is a non-licensed person who performs clerical unit tasks as requested. This role involves preparing medical records, handling telephone communication with courtesy and confidentiality, performing various clerical duties, and possessing a working knowledge of policies. The position also requires handling public inquiries, assisting co-workers, maintaining positive customer relations, and supporting the Medical Center’s Mission/Vision/philosophy. Additionally, the role requires regular and predictable attendance and may involve serving as a sitter after completing designated education and training. Other essential duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS required.
  • Good verbal communication is a must.
  • Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic.
  • Must be able to sit and stand, intermittent 8 to 12 hours a day.
  • Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard.
  • Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines.
  • Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing.
  • Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition.
  • Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 35 lbs.
  • Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.

Nice To Haves

  • 6 months of healthcare experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in clerical tasks desired.
  • Experience in computers is desired.
  • Medical Terminology is an asset but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare medical records for discharge, admissions, and transfers.
  • Able to communicate information verbally and via messages in writing.
  • Handle telephone communication with courtesy, accuracy, and respect for confidentiality.
  • Perform clerical duties as requested.
  • Possess a working knowledge of policies.
  • Handle inquiries from the public as needed.
  • Assist co-workers as needed/ requested.
  • Maintain an effective rapport with all customers.
  • Support the Medical Center’s Mission/Vision/ philosophy positively.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Expected to serve as sitters as needed, following the successful completion of designated sitter education and training provided.
  • Perform other essential duties as assigned.
