About The Position

The Unit Secretary performs clerical and receptionist duties under the direction and supervision of the Clinical Director. This role involves transcribing physician orders, performing order entry on the computer, scheduling diagnostic tests and therapies for patients, assembling admission and discharge charts, and maintaining patient medical records. The Unit Secretary also completes documentation for billing, answers telephone calls, provides routine approved information, and relays calls and messages to appropriate staff. This position requires demonstrating professional behavior consistent with the Mission of MercyOne, the Vision of Patient Care Services, evidence-based standards of care, and established policies and procedures.

Requirements

Nice To Haves

  • A degree from higher level education degree that requires a high school diploma or GED as a pre-requisite is also permitted
  • Previous clerical and computer experience is desired
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the cleanliness of the unit
  • Order and stock appropriate inventory of departmental supplies
  • Set up rooms for new patients
  • Compile reports and records
  • Promote and establish effective relationships within the department, with other departments, physicians, and with hospital guests and clients
  • Take an active role in enhancing abilities to carry out job functions through professional/job related growth and development
  • Provide physical, emotional, and spiritual support to the patient/family with respect to age specific and culturally sensitive needs as described in the department’s scope of service
  • Meet core nursing competency requirements and unit-specific competencies upon hire and annually, as appropriate to job role
