The Unit Secretary works cooperatively with all members of the health care team in performing clerical and receptionist duties and assists clinical personnel with nonclinical duties. The Unit Secretary acts as a resource for patients and family/visitors, addresses administrative needs in a respectful and caring manner, adheres to infection prevention and policies and procedures to ensure safe and optimal care. They assist in providing patient comfort and safety, communicate effectively with the patient, family, and medical staff during the continuum of care, and comply with Joint Commission’s national patient safety goals and organizational quality dashboard/benchmarking goals. The Unit Secretary identifies common variables affecting patient care and follows reporting process, maintains cooperative working relationships with members of the hospital team, participates in activities in alignment with the Magnet Model and organizational activities, and reports matters requiring Nursing intervention immediately. They support patient care within scope of a practice as directed by other members of the healthcare team and utilizes resources in an economical manner. Department Specific Competencies include overseeing and coordinating NST, Induction, and surgery case scheduling on a daily basis to proactively optimize OR room time, productivity and resource utilization.
