About The Position

This multi-functional role requires incumbents to be cross-trained to perform Unit Secretary duties as well as at least one other clinical support job for at least 20% of the time in each role. Cross-training may include Patient Care Technician, Nursing Specialty Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, and/or Monitor Technician. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the individual will provide excellent customer service while performing clerical and administrative services, monitoring, ordering, and stocking supplies, and maintaining a safe work environment. Additional functions may include observing cardiac monitors, data collection, performing basic nursing procedures, monitoring, measuring and documenting patient responses, and assisting with treatments and procedures. The specific accountabilities for the clinical support roles are detailed in their respective job descriptions. The percentage of time spent in clinical support may vary by unit, but at least 20% of the time will be dedicated to a clinical support role.

Requirements

  • Completion of a nursing assistant, patient care tech, medical assistant, EMT, Paramedic, surgical tech, phlebotomy, military medical corpsman or nursing fundamentals course preferred.
  • Previous experience as nursing assistant, PCT, MA, EMT, Paramedic, Surgical Tech, Phlebotomist, Medical Corpsman or nursing student is preferred.
  • No experience required.

  • Licensure, certification, or registration in the field of training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general reception and other duties at the nurse’s station.
  • Responds to patient calls via intercom or in person.
  • Assists patients, family, visitors and staff in a kind, professional and efficient manner.
  • Provides administrative and clerical support, including data entry, meeting minutes, maintaining bulletin boards, and organizing downtime forms.
  • Manages ordering, stocking, and inventory of equipment and supplies in collaboration with the nurse manager, including daily monitoring of supplies, ordering office or special supplies, monitoring PAR levels, and maintaining/organizing unit supply rooms.
  • Coordinates the maintenance of a safe, clean, and functional physical environment in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Monitors designated patient safety systems for alerts and immediately notifies the appropriate RN.
  • Provides direct patient care within scope of practice as directed by providers and licensed staff.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living including eating, dressing, toileting, bathing and transferring.
  • Assists with admission of patients to the unit by preparing room, greeting, and orienting patient and/or family.
  • Assists with walking, turning, positioning and ambulating patients.
  • Assists with removing and reapplying compression devices.
  • Performs data collection including vital signs, oxygen saturation, temperature, cardiac monitoring, non-invasive blood pressure monitoring systems, collection of basic/sterile specimens, and documents fluid intake and output.
  • Performs point of care testing as trained and delegated by RN.
  • Reports lab values to RN.
  • Provides patient care as delegated by the RN, including sterile and non-sterile soaks, application of simple dressings, perineal care, basic ostomy care, nasal cannula, phlebotomy, EKGs and incentive spirometry.
  • Insertion and removal of straight catheters (in & out catheters) and removal only of Foley catheters may be performed with appropriate training and clinical competency validation.
  • Assists with fall prevention interventions and patient restraints as delegated.
  • Assists the patient care team with transporting patients to diagnostic studies and floor assignments.
  • Provides and documents comfort and non-pharmacological pain management measures.
  • Documents data on medical records and informs RN of activities performed, observations of patients and changes in patient status.
  • Charts all observations, clinical data, and procedures performed in EMR.
  • Maintains use of appropriate medical equipment and supplies.
  • Returns equipment to other units as needed.
  • Cleans and stocks carts, rooms, hallways and kitchens.
  • Changes linens as needed.
  • Consults with and keeps supervisor informed of unit activities, needs, and problems related to patient care.
  • Follows department, unit, and hospital policies, procedures, objectives, quality, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information.
  • Helps to ensure smooth operation of the nursing unit or facility.
  • Participates in process improvement initiatives.
  • Serves as a role model and participates in educating and mentoring other members of the care team.
  • Practices safe, efficient use of supplies.
  • Attends department and organization meetings.
  • Completes annual compliance training.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, therapeutic and caring environment for patients, families, and other staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for one’s own professional development and continuing education.
  • Performs patient observer duties as assigned.
