About The Position

The Unit Secretary/Monitor Technician performs clerical, clinical, and communication functions on an assigned nursing unit. This role involves providing courteous reception, coordinating patient care activities, and utilizing various computer systems. The position requires a thorough understanding of medical terminology, EKG rhythm interpretation, and effective communication skills. The Unit Secretary/Monitor Technician is responsible for maintaining patient records, transcribing orders, managing supplies, and ensuring the monitoring equipment is functioning correctly. This role is crucial for the efficient operation of the nursing unit and the delivery of quality patient care.

Requirements

  • High school or equivalent
  • Specialized/technical training
  • Successful completion of Medical Terminology exam
  • Successful completion of basic EKG course
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service behavior
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) - If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

Responsibilities

  • Perform clerical duties including printing census logs, updating admission/discharge information, and completing A/D/T in the computer system.
  • Manage downtime procedures, complete repair requests, and maintain logs for outpatient stays and orders.
  • Order supplies weekly and as needed, and maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Stock printers and fax machines with paper.
  • Accurately and completely transcribe all orders, prioritizing stat orders.
  • Notify the RN of all stat orders immediately.
  • Scan orders to pharmacy and enter orders into the computer system.
  • Transcribe orders to Kardex, signing, dating, and timing completion.
  • Flag telephone orders for signatures.
  • Notify appropriate departments of stat orders.
  • Utilize courtesy, compassion, kindness, and honesty when interacting with the public, patients, and hospital personnel.
  • Answer phone and call lights courteously and promptly within 3 rings.
  • Identify self by name and unit, and route calls/requests to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist with the management of patient records, ensuring the chart is in optimum condition.
  • Assist ancillary personnel in obtaining chart parts.
  • Review and assemble admission chart forms within 20 minutes of admission.
  • Add appropriate forms at midnight and as needed, filing diagnostic and lab reports.
  • Replace chart dividers and place discharge/thinned charts in HIM Basket.
  • Complete assignments as directed and demonstrate collaboration, congeniality, and problem-solving skills.
  • Maintain open communication between management and staff.
  • Attend 80% of unit secretary meetings or read minutes within 5 working days.
  • Communicate and clarify outstanding patient care orders/activities to the oncoming unit secretary.
  • Assist with orienting new unit secretaries.
  • Assist M.D.s and staff in obtaining computerized hospital and/or patient information.
  • Maintain communication with Charge RN and staff about unit issues.
  • Monitor and interpret EKG rhythms consistently and correctly.
  • Monitor EEG patterns for signs of seizure activity.
  • Notify RN/Charge Nurse promptly of EKG changes or concerns.
  • Never leave the desk unattended while patients are being monitored.
  • Track and maintain all monitoring equipment.
  • Document date and time RN notified on rhythm strip.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
