About The Position

The Unit Secretary/Monitor Technician performs clerical, clinical, and communication functions on an assigned nursing unit. This role involves providing courteous reception on the nursing unit and coordinating patient care activities. The position requires a thorough understanding and expertise in computer systems, accurate transcription of orders, excellent customer service, and effective maintenance of medical records. Additionally, the role includes monitoring EKG rhythms and EEG patterns, notifying the RN/Charge Nurse of changes, and maintaining monitoring equipment. The position is per diem, with 12-hour day shifts, and is a non-exempt, union position.

Requirements

  • High school or equivalent
  • Specialized/technical training
  • Successful completion of Medical Terminology exam
  • Successful completion of basic EKG course
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to speak, read and write English proficiently
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service behavior
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) - If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

Responsibilities

  • Clerical duties including printing census reports, updating census logs, completing A/D/T in the computer system, managing downtime procedures, completing repair requests, maintaining logs and order forms, ordering supplies, and maintaining a clean and organized work area.
  • Accurately transcribing all orders, prioritizing stat orders, notifying the RN of stat orders, scanning orders to pharmacy, ordering tests via computer entry, transcribing to Kardex, and flagging telephone orders for signatures.
  • Providing customer service by interacting with the public, patients, and hospital personnel with courtesy, compassion, kindness, and honesty.
  • Answering phones and call lights courteously and promptly, identifying self, routing calls appropriately, and ensuring connection is made.
  • Assisting with the management of patient records, ensuring charts are in optimum condition, and assisting ancillary personnel in obtaining chart parts.
  • Reviewing and assembling admission chart forms, adding appropriate forms, filing diagnostic and lab reports, replacing chart dividers, and placing discharge and thinned charts for retrieval.
  • Completing assignments as directed, demonstrating collaboration, congeniality, and problem-solving skills.
  • Maintaining open communication between management and staff, attending unit secretary meetings or reading minutes, and communicating outstanding patient care orders/activities to the oncoming unit secretary.
  • Showing initiative in orienting new unit secretaries and assisting M.D.s and staff in obtaining computerized hospital and/or patient information.
  • Maintaining communication with Charge RN and staff about unit issues.
  • Monitoring and interpreting EKG rhythms consistently and correctly.
  • Monitoring EEG patterns for signs of seizure activity.
  • Notifying RN/Charge Nurse promptly of EKG changes or concerns.
  • Ensuring the desk is never left unattended while patients are being monitored.
  • Tracking and maintaining all monitoring equipment, including telemetry boxes and applicable equipment.
  • Documenting the date and time the RN was notified on the rhythm strip.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
