About The Position

This multi-functional role requires incumbents to be cross-trained to perform Unit Secretary duties as well as at least one other clinical support job, spending at least 20% of time in each role. Cross-training may include Patient Care Technician, Nursing Specialty Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, and/or Monitor Technician. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, this position provides excellent customer service, clerical and administrative services, manages supplies, and maintains a safe work environment. Additional duties, under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, may include observing cardiac monitors, data collection, performing basic nursing procedures, monitoring and documenting patient responses, assisting with treatments and procedures, and maintaining patient care equipment. The specific accountabilities for the clinical support roles are detailed in their respective job descriptions. The percentage of time spent in clinical support may vary by unit, but will be at least 20%.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • No previous experience required.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • After hire, requires attendance of formal arrhythmia training class and successful completion of the Prisma Health Arrhythmia exam with a minimum passing score within 2 attempts.
  • Successful completion of the arrhythmia exam must be completed within 30 days of hire.
  • Arrhythmia competencies must be maintained on an annual basis if selected into a monitor tech role.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general reception and other duties at the nurse’s station.
  • Responds to patient calls via intercom or in person.
  • Assists patients, family, visitors and staff in a kind, professional and efficient manner.
  • Provides administrative and clerical support as needed for the unit, including data entry, meeting minutes, maintaining bulletin boards, and organizing downtime forms.
  • Manages ordering, stocking, and inventory of equipment and supplies in collaboration with the nurse manager, including daily monitoring of supplies, ordering office or special supplies, monitoring PAR levels, and maintaining/organizing unit supply rooms.
  • Coordinates the maintenance of a safe, clean, and functional physical environment in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Monitors designated patient safety systems for alerts and immediately notifies the appropriate RN.
  • Maintains patient records; ensures that charts are current, complete and thinned as needed according to policies and procedures.
  • Observes cardiac monitors and reports any changes in cardiac rhythm per policy.
  • Receives report from the previous shift and documents strips per policy.
  • Responsible for the management and distribution of transmitter boxes.
  • Ensures transmitter boxes are returned to the surveillance center in a timely manner after discontinuation of telemetry monitoring.
  • Reports problems regarding poor transmission, etc., to the appropriate unit and personnel.
  • Reports telemetry system failures to designated personnel and departments.
  • Completes telemetry summary report per policy guidelines.
  • Triages incoming phone calls, provides appropriate information in a calm and concise manner, and logs phone calls.
  • Maintains adequate supplies and keeps the monitoring areas and equipment clean and organized.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
