About The Position

Provide assistance in completing a variety of clerical, messenger and receptionist duties under the general supervision of the Unit Director/Manager, Clinical Coordinator, Clinical Supervisor or Charge Nurse.

Requirements

  • High school graduate.
  • Proficiency in spelling and accurate attention to details.
  • Exhibits communication and verbal skills.
  • Maintains composure in dealing with a variety of personalities and a sometimes high pressure environment.
  • Relates to staff, physicians, patients/family, visitors, outside agency personnel.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous secretarial experience desirable.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and computer skills desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains patient medical records.
  • Records all necessary information in the Automated Emergency Department log as well as be able to run monthly reports.
  • Files Emergency Department records appropriately daily.
  • Compiles ED charts for appropriate categories and sends to HIM daily.
  • Pulls patient reports for physician review and then sends to HIM.
  • Is proficient in computerized physician on call schedule.
  • Communicates with patients, staff and physicians.
  • Notifies admissions and ED cashiers regarding patient admissions.
  • Answers and screens telephone calls. Receives and delivers messages to patients and unit personnel in a timely manner.
  • Pages medical personnel as directed including emergency codes.
  • Assists physicians in obtaining reports, charts and other information.
  • Receives phoned x-ray/lab reports. Communicates information to the nurse in charge or physician.
  • Maintains patient information system.
  • Enters appropriate physician orders into the computer. Obtains RN verification.
  • Maintains proficiency with electronic tracking system.
  • Performs a variety of clerical duties.
  • Restocks clerical supplies as necessary.
  • Duplicates chart material as requested by unit personnel.
  • Collects and distributes mail 7-3 and 3-11.
  • Assists in orienting new employees.
  • Assists in maintaining an orderly and well functioning environment.
  • Runs errands as needed.
  • Maintains patient information on ED record and requisitions during computer downtime.
  • Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
