About The Position

The Unit Nurse Educator (UNE) promotes excellence in nursing practice by providing expert nursing care to patients and functions as a clinical/educational resource to nursing staff. The nurse-patient/family relationship, continuity of care and accountability are central to the delivery of individualized high quality patient care. The Unit Nurse Educator facilitates the coordination of care across the continuum and demonstrates safe practice within the domains of clinical judgment and decision making, nurse-patient/family relationship, clinical leadership, and clinical scholarship. The Unit Nurse Educator provides direct and indirect care to patients in collaboration with other health care team members. The Clinical educator maintains a current level of knowledge and skill with technical procedures as defined by nursing specialty organization, complies with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies, and is currently licensed in the state of Massachusetts as a registered nurse.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science, Nursing required
Current license to practice professional nursing from the Massachusetts Board of Registration
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or (ACLS) certification
Knowledge of nursing theory and practice acquired through completion of Board of Registration approved nursing education program located within the United States or as certified by the Commission of Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) in order to be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse
3 years current, relevant nursing experience is required

Responsibilities

Facilitates the nursing process, including maintaining clinical skills, assuming direct patient care when necessary, providing safe patient care, performing systematic patient and family assessments, evaluating care effectiveness, and communicating the plan of care.
Collaborates with staff nurses on assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, and documentation of nursing care, providing clinical education support, assessing and documenting progress of practice nurses, observing care delivery, offering guidance, and providing resources to improve patient care outcomes and develop staff skills.
Coordinates patient teaching and discharge planning with nurses.
Improves nursing practice by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient outcomes and standards of care, working with leadership to plan, implement, and evaluate practice changes, developing unit-based standards of practice/protocols, educating nurses on these standards, coordinating and implementing unit-based education on new policies, procedures, products, and equipment, participating in hospital and nursing committees, developing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives, assuring maintenance of educational files, bulletin boards, and literary resources, and ensuring adherence to and evaluation of compliance with policies, procedures, professional nursing standards, and regulatory agencies.
Promotes excellence in nursing practice by providing expert nursing care and functioning as a clinical resource, guiding and instructing staff, evaluating nursing practice to provide clinical learning opportunities, assisting staff to incorporate evidence-based knowledge, and evaluating nurse's progress along the pathway for professional development.
Integrates the components of professional nursing practice by serving as a role model, demonstrating professional behavior, adhering to practice guidelines specific to the setting, using resource manuals and professional journals, seeking guidance from experts, being knowledgeable about performance improvement activities, demonstrating skills as a responsive team member, assuring completion of assignments, functioning without supervision, recognizing and respecting the roles of other health care providers, delegating appropriately, sharing information, communicating patient needs, seeking and offering support to peers, and upholding standards of quality nursing care.
Assumes the role of an evidence-based practice champion by incorporating research-based knowledge, participating in research projects, and participating in and implementing Journal Clubs.
Demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning by identifying typical problems, reviewing practice decisions, learning from professional relationships, seeking assignments that strengthen skill acquisition, identifying learning needs, setting goals for development, participating in professional organizations, pursuing certification, and participating in Shared Governance Councils and/or committees.
Develops formal and informal educational programs to assist nursing staff with meeting performance expectations, working with leadership to determine educational programs, developing and implementing unit-based programs based on needs assessments, participating in hospital-wide programs, developing and implementing orientation schedules and programs for new staff, reviewing research findings, evaluating, counseling, and documenting competency and performance of nursing staff, and assuring attendance at educational offerings.
Serves as a resource for students from affiliated schools of nursing and allied health.
