About The Position

The Unit Clerk is responsible for clerical and receptionist duties, communication, and computer support within the unit/department she/he is assigned. Requirements

  • High School Graduate/GED required.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Attend St. Luke’s University Health Network Unit Clerk and MT courses or evidence of previous training determined through competency testing.
  • Must have the ability for touching as it relates to perceiving attributes of an object.
  • Must have the ability for hearing as it relates to normal conversation, high and low frequencies.
  • Must have the ability to see as it relates to general, near, far, color, and peripheral vision.
  • Must have hand/eye coordination for computer operation.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous unit clerk or applicable hospital experience preferred.
  • Attendance at additional classes to support other functions of the role may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates communications between members of the health care team, other departments, patient, family, and visitors.
  • Welcomes and/or assists all individuals when they arrive in the unit/department in a professional, friendly and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrates ability to support computer technology by acting as an expert resource for physicians and staff.
  • Assembles, maintains, and coordinates all activities and processes related to the patient’s medical record (chart) according to policy.
  • Completes assigned clerical duties related to the admission, transfer and discharge processes.
  • Accurately enters orders and charges.
  • Schedules, coordinates and ensures patient timeliness for diagnostic testing.
  • Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots all office equipment including computer, fax machine, and printers.
  • Maintains a current, accurate and cost effective inventory of unit/department of office supplies and forms.
  • Maintains unit/department logs and statistics.
  • Performs chart audits or data collection as directed.
  • Participates in activities which promote personal/professional development.
  • Serves on assigned committees.
  • Complies with established chain of command for work related problems.
