This role involves formulating and raising vital clinical questions, bringing practice issues to the attention of others, and utilizing reliable sources for current standards of practice. The educator will establish and maintain a system for assessing quality nursing care, use QI tools to assess performance, and provide leadership in generating clinical inquiry and critical thinking among staff. They will systematically evaluate the quality, cost, and effectiveness of nursing practice, participate in the development and sustainability of standards for professional practice and nursing education programs, and actively build effective interdisciplinary relationships. The role also contributes to the design of an evidence-based continuing education curriculum, creates learning opportunities, and fosters improvement in patient care by helping professional staff develop systematic ways of studying and resolving clinical/systems challenges. The educator serves as a resource for policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines, maintains clinical expertise, assesses educational needs, and collaborates with directors and managers to develop and implement staff orientation, competency, continuing education, and in-service programs. They contribute to curricula for team leaders, charge nurses, preceptors, and super-users, and develop/conduct educational programs on quality improvement and evidence-based practice. Principles of adult learning and multigenerational differences are incorporated into program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Classes are taught related to patient care in the practice area, ensuring culturally appropriate and age-specific content. Instructional materials from various media and formats are used, and staff are assisted to utilize quality improvement data to drive practice changes. Recommendations are made for changes in educational goals based on evaluation data. The educator facilitates the implementation of new health care technology through training programs and monitors evaluation. Educational opportunities are provided for nurses at all career stages, and teaching strategies are tailored to learner needs. The role acts as an effective role model and resource for nursing students and clinical affiliations, demonstrates engagement in lifelong learning, and shares new knowledge at professional conferences or through publications. A practice and learning environment that adapts to change is created, and the educator is known as a "relationship builder" who champions working together and creating synergy. They participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of practice standards, collaborate with unit managers/directors on staff performance reviews and selection, and lead committees/work groups related to educational activities and quality improvement. The educator participates in the change process and development of innovative solutions, supports the integration of quality, audit, evaluation data, and research into practice and educational programs, and facilitates teambuilding and leadership development. An environment that recognizes, encourages, and rewards excellent clinical nursing practice performance is created. Occasional travel may be required.
