About The Position

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to; performing general clerical duties for the ED unit. Also implements physician orders as well as organizing and coordinating the nursing unit. Other functions that may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of medical terminology required (course work or experience).
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must also be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
  • Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
  • Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the mission, goals, policies, and standards of nursing.
  • Hospital and ED policies and work rules are recognized, supported, and implemented.
  • Demonstrates patient advocacy.
  • Maintains patient rights and confidentiality
  • Communicates concern and sensitivity to the needs of peers and other staff.
  • Provides effective feedback.
  • Communicates openly and freely with all employees in the hospital.
  • Fosters cooperation and coordination of services among employees and departments.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication within the department and with other departments within the MyMichigan Medical Center-Gratiot system and with members of the community.
  • Communicates patient care information accurately to floor staff.
  • Responsible to know department specific safety requirements and performs according to procedure in all hospital emergency situations.
  • Unsafe conditions are reported promptly.
  • Reviews safety manual annually.
  • Participates in safety regulations and external regulations.
  • Reports to Manager, Infection Control Nurse or OHS of actual or potential toxic or hazardous conditions in the work environment.
  • Utilizes appropriate lift equipment on a routine basis.
  • Participates in opportunities for staff education in: New employee orientation, Department/job specific education, Education for new services provided by the department.
  • Attends education days annually
  • Participates in interdisciplinary performance improvement activities.
  • Participates in established departmental and hospital quality improvement efforts and quality assurance standards.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with Nursing Units, Physicians, Physician offices, and when appropriate, other health care agencies and community service agencies to enhance the continuity of patient care services.
  • Answers incoming telephone calls promptly and exercises excellent customer service skills on the telephone.
  • Performs general clerical duties, such as typing, copying, filing and including computer entry.
  • Assists the professional staff with unit organization and clerical support.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly nursing station.
  • Supports the mission, goals, policies and standards of the department.
  • Maintains patient rights and confidentiality.
  • Assists with nursing functions when needed. Assignments to include one on one patient monitoring and patient transporting.
  • Is responsible for delivery of specimens (i.e. urine, stool, sputum, blood, etc.) using standard precautions.
  • Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies: Possesses an understanding of infection prevention and control measures designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
  • Maintains the standards of the infection prevention and control policies.
  • Implements and maintains isolation techniques per policy.
  • Follows hand hygiene policies and utilizes personal protective equipment as required.
