About The Position

The Department of Labor & Industry is seeking an independent and highly motivated individual to join our Audit and Compliance, Pittsburgh West team as an Unemployment Compensation Tax Agent. This role involves travel, working from home, and on-site work to ensure employers comply with PA Unemployment Compensation (UC) law. The position offers variety, challenge, and the satisfaction of making a real impact across Pennsylvania communities. The team values accuracy, fairness, and public service.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree which includes or is supplemented by 18 college credits in finance and accounting, of which at least 6 college credits are in accounting; or An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes 18 college credits in finance and accounting, of which at least 6 college credits are in accounting.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license which is not under suspension.
  • Must currently reside in or be willing to relocate to Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, or Westmoreland County.
  • Must meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Must pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment due to access to Federal Tax Information (FTI).

  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and submit quality audits; examine and analyze employer financial records and related documents to calculate gross and taxable wages, ensure each employer reported and paid the correct tax liability, and identify hidden or unreported wages and misclassified workers.
  • Rebuild payroll records when documentation is incomplete or missing by conducting interviews, investigating facts, and collaborating with other auditors on complex cases; document missing, incorrect, or changed information and correct the employer’s account.
  • Conduct investigations into blocked UC claims, employer registration changes, and situations that could involve fraud, bankruptcy, or criminal proceedings under PA UC Law.
  • Explain audit findings, the assessment process, and appeal rights; answer any questions employers may have about UC Law.
  • Obtain payments, initiate refunds, or negotiate payment plans; when necessary, use administrative reviews, criminal complaints, or subpoenas to compel employer compliance; attend and testify at court hearings.
  • Maintain thorough written records of audits, investigations, and all daily work activities.
