About The Position

We are seeking a proactive and results-driven Underwriting Manager to lead our junior underwriting team. In this role, you will oversee daily workflows, drive employee development, and serve as the strategic bridge between our brokers, carriers, and internal departments. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated professional who thrives in dynamic environments and is passionate about insurance.

Requirements

  • College or University level Degree/Undergraduates Degree or comparable experience.
  • RIBO License is required.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a general insurance brokerage.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a managerial role.
  • In-depth knowledge of various personal lines products.
  • Proficient with insurance policy systems and MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting principles, policies, and procedures within the insurance industry.

Nice To Haves

  • CIP or CAIB Certification or working towards its completion is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with company portals and Broker Management System (EPIC) is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, carriers, and internal teams; collaborate on complex escalations and manage broker quote requests for existing policies.
  • Address documentation issues by engaging with the appropriate parties to ensure all required policy information is complete and accurate.
  • Lead performance management initiatives, including conducting performance reviews and implementing strategies that drive employee development and organizational success, and providing recommendations for compensation reviews.
  • Oversee team operations by resolving concerns, balancing workloads, and managing employee attendance.
  • Facilitate regular team meetings to review goals, share updates, and reinforce expectations.
  • Establish and communicate clear performance targets, monitor workforce planning, and identify hiring needs to ensure optimal team capacity.
  • Collaborate with BD Managers to organize carrier training sessions for the team.
  • Communicate carrier underwriting and portal updates to the team and organize training sessions when workflows change.
  • Deliver training to junior team members on portals, ensuring proficiency and accuracy in system usage.
  • Oversee departmental workflows and compliance standards, ensuring timely service delivery and strict adherence to underwriting guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as backup for policy processing, assisting with uploads, endorsements, and cancellations when issuance delays occur.
  • Generate and analyze reports weekly and monthly to track policy issuance and provide performance updates to the VP of Operations.
  • Review audit reports and ensure correction of errors.
  • Maintain data integrity across all electronic records, safeguarding accuracy and confidentiality in accordance with industry standards and brokerage guidelines.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point by resolving high-level issues and providing strategic guidance to address complex problems.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement, recommend solutions, and implement best practices to enhance team quality and productivity.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development, staying informed on industry trends, carrier updates, product innovations, legislative changes, and technology advancements to maintain licensing and expertise.
  • Collaborate closely with the VP of Operations and BD Managers to align departmental objectives with organizational goals.
