About The Position

Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Renewals, this role is part of the Disability Solutions and Underwriting team within our Workplace Benefits and Retirement division. The Underwriting Analyst - Small Group Renewal plays a critical role in supporting the financial management of our Group Benefits business through data analysis, rate calculations, renewal preparation, and financial reporting. This is an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented professional who enjoys working with data, solving complex problems, collaborating with a variety of business partners, and continuously expanding their knowledge within the group benefits and insurance industry.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Curious and inquisitive. Loves math!
  • Energized when working in partnership with team members and many internal business areas, and does this with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Highly proficient with Excel and easily learns new tools and applications.
  • Effective and efficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines, work under pressure, and prioritize multiple tasks and shifting priorities.
  • Critical thinker who can problem-solve and make good decisions when working with incomplete information.
  • Understands what it means to put the customer first.
  • Thirst for knowledge. Willingness to work towards a Group Benefits Associate designation or Certified Employee Benefit Specialist designation under the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) program.
  • Reliability Status Security Clearance – this can only be completed with candidates who receive an offer of employment. This is a personal security status that is required as a condition of employment before an employee can gain access to Protected B information, assets or work sites as outlined by the Government of Canada website. The cost of submitting these checks will be covered by Canada Life.

Responsibilities

  • Review employee data received from the Plan Sponsor for reasonableness and accuracy then manipulate it for import into the ARC tool.
  • Calculate manual rates at renewal and for options/costings, performing analysis on the change in a group’s manual rate year over year.
  • Review premium, claims, rates, and reserves for accuracy and reasonableness.
  • Identify erroneous data and coordinate with partner departments to fix the data.
  • Create the renewal analyses, rate exhibits and listings that are part of the package delivered to the Plan Sponsor by the Underwriter and the Account Executive.
  • Create the financial report that will be provided to the Plan Sponsor. Tasks related to the financial report directly impact corporate accounting systems.
  • Assist with non-standard on demand reporting and financial estimates.
  • Assist with preparing monthly/quarterly/annual scheduled reporting.
