About The Position

The Underwriter will evaluate group risks for existing clients and new group opportunities. This position analyzes and accepts risk in order to retain membership, grow revenue and help maintain a profitable book of business. Underwriters are expected to progress through the levels of risk analysis through experience rating, course training, development of analytical skills and effective communication and leadership. Underwriters demonstrate acumen in professional negotiation and problem resolution.

Requirements

  • Bachelors’ degree in business preferred and three to five years of underwriting experience preferred OR equivalent combination of education and experience which will provide the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Prior dental underwriting experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare data collection and analysis to underwrite assigned clients and groups while consistently exercising independent judgement and discretion.
  • Implement underwriting guidelines, practices and procedures for dental business through sound creative underwriting and business judgment in the timely analysis and evaluation of group insurance risk.
  • Evaluate and accept risk. Suggest, approve or deny changes to contracts for moderate to complex group accounts. Analyze and evaluate plan changes, extensions of coverage and benefit changes.
  • Establish effective working relationships with Marketing/Sales personnel, Insurance, Legal, Contracts, and Claims departments through professional negotiation, responsive communication and problem resolution while meeting customer expectations.
  • Prepare utilization reports and determine the degree of risk involved for the insurance company and set the premium.
  • Prepare and underwrite new group proposals and renewals for small to large size group dental business.
  • Review and approve small to large group sold cases.
  • Accurate and timely data entry into proposal and renewal logs.
  • Initial preparation of rate renewal and statement of experience.
  • Initial preparation of periodic analyses and financial forecast.
  • Prepare and audit quarterly marketing and sales reports.
  • Compile and execute documents within SERFF insurance system to file rates in Washington.
  • Communicate with insurance officials, regulatory agencies and other professionals when appropriate.
  • Track work and turn-around times in various systems.
  • Mentor Associate Underwriters when appropriate.
  • Provide back-up for Schedule A’s.
  • Rate self-funded cases and submit reports.
  • Responds to inquiries and written correspondence from policyholders, brokers/agents, and related internal departments regarding new and in-force business.
  • Provide leadership to and approve the work of Associate Underwriters.
  • Assist in the training of new Associate Underwriters and temporary employees.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
