Ascot’s Workers Compensation business unit is seeking a motivated Underwriter to support the profitable growth and management of its Workers Compensation portfolio. This role involves disciplined risk selection, underwriting analysis, and fostering strong agency partnerships. The Underwriter will evaluate new and renewal business submissions, assess risk quality, determine appropriate pricing and coverage terms, and manage an assigned book of business in accordance with underwriting guidelines and authority levels. This is an in-office position with a hybrid work schedule.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant workers’ compensation underwriting experience.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience required.
  • Strong collaborative skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Commitment to provide superior service to customers and clients.
  • 10 – 15 % travel in designated region, typically day travel with limited overnight trips.
  • Must be positive, self-motivated, and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Highly customer-centric both internally and externally.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate new and renewal Workers Compensation submissions and determine acceptability within established underwriting guidelines.
  • Analyze exposure information, payroll classifications, experience modifications, loss runs, financial statements, and operational details.
  • Assess account-specific hazards, safety programs, return-to-work programs, and employer risk management practices.
  • Review OSHA history, claim frequency and severity trends, and other risk indicators impacting underwriting decisions.
  • Determine appropriate pricing, coverage terms, conditions, and endorsements.
  • Exercise underwriting authority to quote, bind, modify, decline, or refer accounts as required.
  • Manage an assigned book of business to achieve growth, retention, rate, and profitability objectives.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, loss ratio trends, concentration risks, and industry exposures.
  • Identify opportunities for remediation, rate adequacy improvements, and profitable growth.
  • Participate in renewal strategy development for key accounts.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with agency and broker partners.
  • Conduct agency visits, virtual meetings, and marketing activities to drive submission flow and business development.
  • Communicate underwriting appetite, guidelines, and product capabilities effectively.
  • Provide responsive service and underwriting support to distribution partners.
  • Partner with Claims, Risk Engineering, Actuarial, Operations, and Product Management teams to support underwriting objectives.
  • Participate in account reviews, referral discussions, and portfolio management meetings.
  • Support underwriting initiatives, process improvements, and digital transformation efforts.

  • Maintain complete underwriting files and documentation supporting decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and corporate policies.
