About The Position

Zurich Canada is seeking an Underwriter for an 18-month contract to join their Middle Market team. The role involves analyzing and underwriting new and renewal business, interacting with the market, and providing exceptional service to customers. The Underwriter will report to the Director of Middle Market, Ontario, and will collaborate with agents, brokers, and customers to understand insurance needs, support sales, and ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines and risk assessment standards. The position utilizes The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority to support retention and new business growth, offering hands-on experience in a collaborative setting. This is an opportunity to build knowledge and experience in a supportive environment. Zurich Canada uses AI tools in its recruitment process, but all hiring decisions are made by qualified professionals. The role follows a hybrid work model, requiring three days per week in-person presence, which may include office time or market-facing engagements.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, with 1 or more years of experience in Insurance or Market-Facing areas (Claims/Underwriting Support, or relevant experience for specialized lines)
  • OR High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2 or more years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry and the legal/regulatory environment
  • Understanding of underwriting philosophy, techniques, and filing regulations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Relationship-building, active listening, and negotiation skills
  • Microsoft Office proficiency

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 1 or more years of underwriting experience

Responsibilities

  • Administer and monitor underwriting rules, rating manuals, and insurance laws/regulations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with distributors (agents and brokers) to support business retention and growth.
  • Collaborate with business line representatives to support customer needs.
  • Identify and qualify new business and renewal opportunities.
  • Analyze exposures, measure risk, and negotiate terms and conditions.
  • Calculate and quote target prices using Zurich’s underwriting tools.
  • Promote Zurich’s products and services to agents, brokers, and customers.
  • Support sales culture as a Help Point for distributors and clients.
  • Participate in sales meetings and target account planning.
  • Update systems with details of broker/client visits and account statuses.
  • Provide technical expertise and clear explanations for underwriting decisions.
  • Resolve technical and operational issues by referring to policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory controls governing work practices.
  • Travel for business and work extended hours during peak periods, as required.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license.
