Underwriter, E&S Property About the Team AXIS’ Excess & Surplus (E&S) Property Division operates within one of the most complex and dynamic areas of the E&S insurance market. The team partners closely with wholesale brokers, facultative reinsurance markets, and internal stakeholders to deliver disciplined underwriting solutions that support profitable growth, strong client relationships, and long-term portfolio stability. How does this role contribute to our collective success? This role contributes through independent underwriting execution, technical expertise, and proactive book management. The Underwriter supports profitability and growth objectives by underwriting complex E&S Property risks, expanding existing broker relationships, and executing underwriting and marketing strategies aligned with AXIS’ risk appetite. The role also contributes by collaborating with internal business partners and sharing expertise to support overall team performance. What will you be doing in this role? Independently underwrite and manage a profitable book of complex surplus lines E&S Property risks, utilizing appropriate analytical diagnostics to assess acceptability, coverage structure, and pricing adequacy. Analyze and evaluate new and renewal submissions, exercising sound underwriting judgment within established guidelines and delegated authority. Assess E&S Property pricing adequacy and structure competitive underwriting solutions aligned with AXIS’ strategic and financial objectives. Negotiate terms and conditions in a highly complex and competitive environment with wholesale brokers and facultative reinsurance markets, with a focus on strengthening and expanding existing relationships. Work on problems of moderate scope where underwriting decisions require analysis of multiple risk, pricing, and market factors, with a planning time horizon extending several months into the future. Underwrite and develop a diversified, profitable book of business in support of strategic business plans and overall growth and profit objectives. Contribute to the execution of a countrywide marketing strategy by identifying wholesale broker partners aligned with AXIS’ E&S Property risk appetite and new business goals. Attend broker and client meetings, typically alongside more senior underwriting leadership, supporting account management, renewal strategy, and relationship development efforts. Collaborate closely with internal business partners across underwriting, claims, operations, actuarial, and leadership teams to support underwriting decisions and operational execution. Provide informal guidance and mentorship to less experienced underwriters and support team knowledge sharing, as appropriate. Maintain awareness of legal, regulatory, and market developments impacting E&S Property underwriting and ensure compliance with applicable standards. You may also be required to take on additional duties, responsibilities and activities appropriate to the nature of this role. What we’re looking for from you Bachelor’s degree required; CPCU, ARM, and/or ASLI designations strongly preferred. Minimum of two (2) years of E&S underwriting experience. Advanced technical underwriting expertise and demonstrated progression of responsibility. Strong negotiation, analytical, and business development capabilities. Established wholesale broker relationships highly desired. A growing knowledge of E&S Property lines of business and applicable legal and regulatory guidelines. Strong communication, influencing, and presentation skills with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of internal and external business partners. For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of $75,000 to $100,000 (GA)Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location. Where this role is based in the United States of America, this role is Exempt for FLSA purposes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of two (2) years of E&S underwriting experience.
  • Advanced technical underwriting expertise and demonstrated progression of responsibility.
  • Strong negotiation, analytical, and business development capabilities.
