We currently have an opportunity for an Underwriter to join our Commercial Surety team based in our Chicago, IL office on a hybrid basis. Surety is a specialized area of the insurance industry that provides financial guarantees to ensure obligations are met. At its core, Surety helps businesses and organizations build trust and maintain compliance. This role is on our Commercial Surety team, which focuses on regulatory and compliance requirements and helps businesses meet statutory obligations. Examples include license and permit bonds, court bonds, and other compliance-related guarantees.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
• 2-3 years of underwriting experience in commercial surety.
• Understanding of financial statements and credit analysis.
• Understanding of legal frameworks and obligations across industries.
• Proven ability to build and maintain strong broker and client relationships.
• Effective communication, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Underwrite new and renewal surety submissions by analyzing financial statements, credit reports, business plans, and other relevant documentation. Begins to develop integrated pictures of factors that affect profitability, growth, retention.
• Make informed decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks within assigned authority, in alignment with underwriting strategy and company guidelines and in partnership with more senior underwriting team. Implements decisions in compliance with guidelines.
• Manage a profitable book of business by conducting portfolio reviews and evaluating producer performance.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients, including regular underwriting meetings with key stakeholders, supporting growth, retention and profitability goals.
• Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., claims, legal, actuarial) to ensure comprehensive account management and support strategic initiatives.
• Gather, analyze and monitor market trends, competitor activity, and industry developments to support underwriting recommendations and business strategy.
• Has limited authority to accept, decline and modify coverages.
• Represent Intact at industry events and agency visits to maintain visibility and strengthen market presence.
