About The Position

The Environmental Science UST Specialist plays a key role in ensuring regulatory compliance and protecting environmental quality. Core responsibilities include: · Reviewing compliance inspections and conducting State UST oversight inspections · Carrying out enforcement actions and facility follow‑up tasks using program tools such as Corrective Action Plans (CAPs) and Enforcement Requests · Conducting Environmental Assessments (EAs) · Issuing UST construction and operating permits in accordance with Montana regulations and industry standards · Delivering licensee training, stakeholder outreach, and compliance assistance · Educating facility owners and operators on UST system requirements and best practices for operation, maintenance, and recordkeeping · Providing on‑site technical assistance and operator training materials to support long‑term compliance This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working both independently and collaboratively, engaging directly with the regulated community, and applying technical and regulatory knowledge to protect Montana’s environment. Because underground storage tank systems involve complex engineering, integrated mechanical and electrical components, and stringent State and Federal performance standards, this position is well‑suited for professionals who are energized by solving multifaceted technical problems and ensuring that sophisticated tank systems operate safely, efficiently, and in full regulatory compliance.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in education, environmental health, the biological or physical sciences or engineering, especially geology, hydrogeology, environmental engineering or environmental sciences or a closely related field.
• Two years of job-related experience.
• Current valid Driver's License and clean driving record in accordance with State of Montana Vehicle Use Policy.
• Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training is required upon hire and Medical Surveillance Program recommended enrollment is recommended.
