This role provides comprehensive care to patients requiring ultrasound services in an organized and systematic manner according to departmental policy and standards. The technician will follow appropriate protocol for ultrasound studies unless specified differently by the Radiologist, and will adhere to ultrasound procedures for biopsies and other Interventional procedures. The position assumes accountability for managing delivery of care and patient safety, and promotes and maintains a safe, clean, and orderly work environment. The technician will produce quality diagnostic images for interpretation, obtain and document patient history and pertinent information, and assess patients for potential risk factors. Ensuring proper identification of patient and patient demographics in PACS, clarifying and following Doctor’s orders, and completing work within an acceptable time frame are key responsibilities. The role also involves maintaining exam room cleanliness after each procedure, adhering to infection control standards specific to patient care, and prioritizing and organizing work assignments while adjusting priorities based on changing situations. Consultation and communication with other departments in a professional manner, planning delivery of care according to patient activity and staff competencies, and preparing patients for procedures by providing instructions to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety are also essential functions. The technician must have the ability to operate/modify equipment and technical factors as needed, ensure equipment is in acceptable condition by conducting routine quality control checks, and follow department standards for reporting equipment malfunctions or problems. Processing self-pay patients according to departmental procedure is also part of the role. In addition to these essential functions, the Ultrasound Technician will ensure full utilization of the Ultrasound department, provide leadership and support for the department, serve as a consultant to staff, and assist in interpreting policies and procedures for staff. The role demonstrates the ability to make decisions, delegate, and assure the welfare of patients and staff. The technician will manage technical staff to provide adequate department coverage within the approved department budget and accept accountability for managing department protocols, ensuring all staff are aware of any new protocols established. Verifying exams in PACS system, canceling and rescheduling patient appointments as needed, correcting and DONE orders when necessary, and replenishing and changing supplies in the assigned area as needed are also part of the general job functions. The role requires demonstrating an understanding of safety, health, and morale needs of customers and co-workers. Other job duties as required may also be assigned.
