About The Position

The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for performing diagnostic general and vascular ultrasound examinations, analyzing images, and communicating findings to the interpreting physician for diagnosis and treatment. This role ensures the quality of ultrasound examinations and proper functioning of equipment, and also involves some clerical duties within the department. The position requires the ability to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan. Maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and facility policies is essential. The technologist must apply independent judgment during examinations, acquire additional imaging as needed, and prepare preliminary findings for the interpreting physician. Responsibilities also include preparing the exam room and equipment, adhering to safety protocols, and assisting with the education and training of students, new staff, and residents. The role requires proficiency in obtaining clinical history to guide the diagnostic process and support accurate diagnosis, and may involve taking call for all ultrasound and peripheral vascular exams offered by the department. This is a part-time position working 40 hours every two-week pay period on day shift, with 8-hour days and varying hours.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree required
  • Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program required
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to explain test and procedures to patients and parents, allay apprehensions, and to interact effectively with physicians, patients, parents, and departmental personnel.
  • Basic computer skills to operate a computer efficiently and effectively.
  • Analytical ability necessary to resolve technical problems.
  • Ability to schedule ultrasound examinations throughout assigned work period to ensure day to day operations.
  • Ability to maintain accurate facility reports and records.
  • Ability to prioritize, work independently and manage simultaneous assignments.
  • Ability to be flexible in schedule and adaptable to constant change.
  • An understanding of Children’s Wisconsin health care delivery system and the impact of other health care delivery system on the patient and family.
  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council required
  • ARDMS-American Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer - The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography required
  • Ultrasound Technologist - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography required

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic general and vascular ultrasound examinations.
  • Analyze images and communicate findings to the interpreting physician.
  • Ensure ultrasound examinations are of acceptable quality.
  • Ensure equipment is functioning properly.
  • Perform some clerical duties in the department.
  • Provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws (HIPPA) and facility policies and procedures.
  • Perform general and vascular ultrasound procedures according to department protocols in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Provide technical assistance during surgical procedures.
  • Accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
  • Verify accuracy of patient demographic information.
  • Review patient medical history and results of other diagnostic tests to ensure proper exam is performed.
  • Coordinate exams with other departments if necessary.
  • Apply independent judgment during the ultrasound examination to ensure appropriate transducer and ultrasound settings are selected as well as appropriate anatomical, pathological, and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the examination images.
  • Acquire additional ultrasound imaging as necessary to facilitate optimum diagnostic results for the interpreting physician.
  • Review examination images, analyze examination results, and prepare preliminary findings for interpreting physician.
  • Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct ultrasound examinations in accordance with infectious disease, sterilization and patient safety, protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Abide by, and maintain a working knowledge of institutional policy, ACR policy and TJC policy on patient safety goals and guidelines.
  • Assist with education and training of sonography students, new staff members and physician residents.
  • Provide patient services consistent with the Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards for the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.
  • Verify and record identification information.
  • Enter appropriate information into patients IDX radiology computer file and film file.
  • Discuss test results with physicians or other department personnel.
  • Maintain equipment, perform safety and quality control checks and notify Manager of any discrepancies found.
  • Provide physician with any technical knowledge concerning an examination performed to aid in their interpretation of the exam.
  • Provide technical assistance during for surgical and aspiration procedures.
  • Be proficient in obtaining a clinical history to guide the diagnostic process and provide clinical information to the Radiologists to support accurate diagnosis.
  • Take call for all ultrasound and peripheral vascular exams offered by the department.
  • Follow Universal Precautions.
