About The Position

This position performs Cardiac Ultrasound on all inpatients and outpatients. An Ultrasound Technologist is a Diagnostic Ultrasound Professional that is qualified by professional credentialing, academic, and clinical experience to provide diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The scope of practice of the Ultrasound Technologist includes those procedures, acts and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience, has demonstrated competency, and has completed the appropriate American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) specialty certification(s) which is the standard of practice in ultrasound. The Cardiac Sonographer is responsible for daily operations of the lab, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality improvement (QI). The sonographer always maintains a high standard of medical ethics and is self-motivated to pursue lifelong learning to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease and new procedures as they evolve.

Requirements

  • Credential: BLS: Basic Life Support
  • Credential: ARDMS: Ultrasound Technologist
  • Associate's Degree required.
  • Degree in Healthcare Related Field.
  • Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate and ARDMS or CCI re-credentialing yearly requirements to maintain active registrant status.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner in person and by phone.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
  • Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
  • Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time.
  • May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling.
  • May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Nice To Haves

  • ULTRA C II, ARDMS OR CCI certification will be accepted.
  • Bachelor of Science degree is preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in sonography preferred.
  • Employees hired before 2010 are exempt from the educational requirement of an associate's degree but must meet the experience, certification/licensures, training and ongoing skills competency.

Responsibilities

  • Performs Cardiac Sonographer core procedures, including Transthoracic echocardiography Transesophageal echocardiography Stress echocardiography, all with and without contrast.
  • Performs diagnostic sonography examinations according to defined imaging protocols for the specific needs of assigned neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Analyze sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.
  • Prepares equipment for ordered exam; transports patients as needed; explains procedure to patient; performs exam; records exam; consults with physician/provider as needed.
  • Performs accurate pre and post-processing of files and reports.
  • Accurately utilizes computer systems and programs specific to Cardiovascular Services.
  • Records any and all patient data appropriately.
  • Utilizes IV Optison contrast and/or agitated saline as required for procedures according to protocols.
  • Monitors patient's physical and mental condition throughout the entire procedure.
  • Participates in obtaining and/or maintenance of ultrasound lab accreditation.
  • Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area and adequate supplies.
  • Provides excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy toward all employees, physicians, associated staff and MyMichigan Health customers and potential customers.
  • Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attends/participates in departmental and hospital meetings.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned including assisting in other areas of the department as needed.
  • Demonstrates competency in Microsoft Windows.
  • Participates in further learning opportunities by MyMichigan Health.
