Works under minimal supervision with the physicians to perform ultrasound imaging exams, exam protocols, accreditation, operations, and facilitation of equipment maintenance. The role involves maintaining a clean and orderly work area, ensuring proper supplies, and being a steward of hospital resources. The sonographer will check equipment, respond to inquiries, communicate issues, and engage in equitable distribution of workloads. They will also participate in training new employees and students, perform quality control on equipment, attend meetings, and complete required courses. Patient interaction includes verifying identification, communicating clearly, ensuring proper preparation, evaluating history and symptoms, instructing patients, and assessing their ability to tolerate the exam. The sonographer must maintain current knowledge and skills for various age groups (newborn, pediatric, young adult, adult, and geriatric). Exam performance includes various ultrasound imaging exams such as carotid, extremity venous and arterial studies, abdominal Doppler, small parts, OB/GYN, and general abdominal/body. They will perform non-invasive imaging evaluation of arteries and veins, verify requisitions, perform high-quality US examinations according to protocol, assist physicians as needed, and ensure proper image and record completion. The sonographer will utilize technical knowledge for accurate and timely exams, complete exam charges and documentation, store images in PACS, and communicate with radiologists or advanced practice sonographers. Administering contrast material and observing for adverse reactions is also part of the role. Job performance may include monitoring and training students and residents, assisting in new staff orientation, participating in QA/QC programs, assisting with accreditation processes, organizing conferences, and arranging for equipment maintenance and repair.
