About The Position

Physicians East, P.A. is a team of skilled healthcare professionals united to deliver quality, cost-efficient, comprehensive healthcare. We are looking for a dedicated sonographer to assist our doctors with diagnosing and monitoring various conditions. You will use high-frequency sound waves to take images of the body’s internal organs and tissues. You will work directly with patients and use the sonographic equipment to record images of the motion, shape, and composition of blood, organs, tissues, and bodily masses. Other responsibilities include the supervision of sonography staff as well as professional development oversight of sonography staff. The lead sonographer also is responsible for inspecting and maintaining equipment, scheduling preventive maintenance and physicist’s surveys, maintaining ACR Accreditations, training new sonographers, and being a clinical preceptor to sonography students.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or completion of a program in medical sonography.
  • Registered or registry eligible by American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in abdomen, GYN, vascular, or breast.

Nice To Haves

  • Two – four years of clinical experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision of sonography staff as well as professional development oversight of sonography staff.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of practice for the sonographer and competency in diagnostic procedures; abdomen, small parts, GYN, breast, and Vascular; ensuring clear images for diagnostic purposes and making adjustments to the sonographic equipment when necessary.
  • Selecting and examining images, looking for differences between healthy and pathological areas, and determining if the scope of the exam should be extended, based on preliminary findings and presenting those preliminary findings to the radiologists.
  • Provides documentation of individual patient care according to history and clinical information obtained from ultrasound study and quality assurance documentation as defined in the policy and procedure manual.
  • Explains appropriately the rationale for ultrasound procedures to patients, answering questions, preparing patients by applying the gel to the skin, and positioning the patients on the table.
  • Recognizes changes in patient status and appropriately communicates to physician.
  • Selects proper technical factors on an individual patient basis depending on the type of procedure being done.
  • Exhibits a working knowledge of principles, practice and procedures involved in the operation of ultrasound equipment.
  • Assists in carrying out Quality Assurance protocols and Quality Improvement measures within the facility.
  • Responsible for maintaining ACR Accreditation; working with the radiologist to pick images for submission.
  • Updates scanning protocols annually for ACR accreditation and when changes are made by Eastern Radiology.
  • Schedules preventive maintenance and physicist’s surveys on all ultrasound equipment, including Trophon Disinfecting System for both diagnostics and Urology.
  • Provides education and training to sonographers in the utilization of new equipment features/benefits and scanning techniques.
  • Assist the manager with the orientation and training of new staff.
  • Function as the clinical, technical leader/expert in sonography imaging within the facility.
  • Provides input for the performance assessment of staff sonographers.
  • Assist with the coordination of any research projects that involve sonography staff.
  • Acts as PCC Student Coordinator for students placed at our facility.
  • Provides coverage to both OBGYN offices when there is a staff shortage.
  • Assists in template changes for all ultrasound schedules as needed.
  • Anticipates and recognizes safety hazards, legal liabilities and intervenes through appropriate channels.
  • Provides and promotes quality care to all patients.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationship with co-workers, patients and other employees of the department and office.
  • Handles the ordering of all supplies for the sonography department. Recognizes individual accountability for and participates in cost containment goals of the department and office.
  • Demonstrates continuous self-improvement through utilization of knowledge gained in clinical experience in Ultrasound.
  • Participates in in-service education, staff meetings and other continuing education programs to maintain optimal technical knowledge. Participates in continuing education and in-services outside Physicians East, P.A. office for 30 hours of continuing education every three years specific to ultrasound.
  • Exhibits ability to problem solve, prioritize and evaluate patient care activities.
  • Adheres to department and office policies.
  • Performs procedures requiring independent judgement with ingenuity and initiative.
  • Evaluates equipment breakdowns and assesses the need for service.
  • Responsible for appropriately charging procedures performed in accordance with federal law.
  • Adheres to the policy and procedure for each ultrasound study and documenting the requirements of the study.
  • Works with Radiology Work List (RIS) and PACS system.
  • Maintains area and equipment in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Attends safety classes and other continuing education classes as offered by Physicians East, P.A.
  • Attends Pitt Community College meetings annually.
  • Maintains yearly CPR certification.
