UI/UX Engineer/Designer Journeyman

ASM ResearchSan Antonio, TX

About The Position

The UI/UX Engineer/Designer Journeyman designs and implements user interfaces for web-based applications in a highly regulated federal IT environment, delivering intuitive, accessible, and consistent user experiences. They translate product and technical requirements into wireframes, mockups, and functional prototypes that guide front-end implementation for workflow-heavy, mission-critical systems. The role blends user research, information architecture, interaction design, and front-end fundamentals to ensure solutions are usable, feasible, and aligned with established design systems and accessibility standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human–Computer Interaction, Graphic Design, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Typically 3–5 years of hands-on experience in UI/UX design or engineering for complex web applications and workflow-heavy use cases.
  • Demonstrated experience creating wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, prototypes, and design systems for enterprise or SaaS-style products.
  • Practical understanding of HTML, CSS, and core JavaScript sufficient to collaborate with front-end engineers and validate design feasibility.
  • Experience designing and testing to modern accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG 2.1/2.2).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience working with agile product and engineering teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing for highly regulated or security-sensitive government environments.
  • Practical experience with accessibility audits and remediation for large-scale web applications.
  • Certification in UX or interaction design (e.g., NN/g UX Certification, HFI CUA).
  • Familiarity with enterprise dashboard and case management design patterns.

Responsibilities

  • Apply user-centered design, design thinking, and interaction design methodologies to complex web applications, creating personas, journey maps, task flows, and information architectures that support clear navigation and workflows.
  • Develop detailed wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, and interactive prototypes using tools such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD, ensuring design intent is clearly communicated to developers.
  • Build and maintain scalable design systems and UI component libraries that support consistency, reuse, and rapid iteration across multiple enterprise applications.
  • Implement responsive and mobile-first UI patterns, optimizing layouts, typography, and visual hierarchy for different devices and viewports while supporting performance-conscious front-end structures.
  • Ensure compliance with accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG 2.1/2.2), including color contrast, keyboard navigation, focus management, and semantic structures in collaboration with front-end engineers.
  • Plan and conduct usability testing, heuristic evaluations, and A/B tests, synthesize findings into actionable design improvements, and present recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with agile product and engineering teams, writing clear design specifications, interaction behaviors, and acceptance criteria for user-facing features.
  • Utilize front-end fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) to partner effectively with engineers and validate feasibility of UI solutions, bridging design and implementation concerns.
  • Stay current with UI/UX trends, enterprise SaaS and dashboard design patterns, and emerging tools to continuously enhance user experience for mission-critical systems.

Benefits

  • Monetary compensation is one component of ASM's overall compensation and benefits package for employees.
