•$102,000 - $174,000•Remote

About The Position

LMI is seeking a UI/UX Designer for its Robotics and Autonomous Systems business unit to create intuitive, visually polished software experiences. The role translates user needs and complex workflows into usable interfaces for mission applications, data platforms, and AI-enabled tools. It spans user research, information architecture, interaction and visual design, prototyping, usability testing, and collaboration with developers through production delivery. An active Secret clearance is required. The Designer will create consistent experiences across integrated applications, including shared navigation, a common entry point, and reusable interface components. The position is remote and may require periodic travel for user research, design workshops, demonstrations, and customer engagements. Classified work must be performed at approved facilities. LMI is a digital solutions provider focused on accelerating government impact through innovation and speed. It provides commercial-grade platforms and mission-ready AI to federal agencies, drawing on expertise in federal deployment and relationships across defense, space, healthcare, and energy. Headquartered in Tysons, Virginia, LMI emphasizes agility and collaboration to help agencies navigate complexity and deliver mission outcomes.

Requirements

  • Active Secret security clearance and ability to maintain it throughout employment.
  • At least five years of professional experience in UI/UX design, product design, interaction design, or a closely related field, including software application design.
  • Bachelor’s degree in interaction design, human-computer interaction, user experience, visual design, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • Portfolio demonstrating user research, interaction design, visual design, and contribution to delivered software products; sanitized case studies or authorized walkthroughs are acceptable for restricted work.
  • Proficiency with Figma or comparable interface-design and prototyping tools, including reusable components, responsive layouts, and interactive prototypes.
  • Experience conducting user research and usability testing and translating findings into design decisions and measurable improvements.
  • Ability to design complex application workflows, information-dense interfaces, and consistent navigation, and to create or maintain reusable design systems.
  • Experience collaborating with software developers, documenting interaction behavior, and reviewing implemented interfaces.
  • Familiarity with accessibility and responsive design practices.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, organization, and independent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work across a distributed team and support periodic travel.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing software for military, federal, national security, or other regulated environments.
  • Experience designing unified interfaces across multiple applications, role-based workspaces, data and analytics platforms, or AI-enabled tools.
  • Experience with operational dashboards, geospatial interfaces, robotics or autonomous-system applications, or workflows used under time and connectivity constraints.
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and component-based front-end frameworks sufficient to collaborate effectively with developers; production software development is not required.
  • Experience supporting Agile delivery, maintaining design work in product backlogs, and collaborating through GitLab, Jira, or comparable platforms.
  • Experience designing for federal accessibility requirements and working with accessibility specialists to validate delivered interfaces.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct user interviews, workflow observations, and discovery sessions; translate findings into prioritized user needs, journey maps, and design requirements.
  • Develop information architecture, navigation structures, user flows, wireframes, high-fidelity interfaces, and interactive prototypes for web applications and integrated platforms.
  • Design dashboards, data tables, search experiences, forms, and approval workflows that clarify complex information and support efficient task completion.
  • Create and maintain a shared design system covering typography, layout, color, components, interaction patterns, and usage guidance.
  • Design interaction states, including loading, empty, error, permission, confirmation, and degraded-connectivity conditions, with clear feedback and recovery paths.
  • Plan and conduct usability testing; document findings, prioritize improvements, and evaluate task completion, errors, and user feedback across iterations.
  • Apply accessibility practices to layouts, contrast, keyboard interactions, focus states, and interface content; coordinate implementation and validation with engineering and testing teams.
  • Collaborate with product managers, developers, platform engineers, and cybersecurity personnel to align designs with mission priorities, technical constraints, access controls, and schedules.
  • Provide annotated designs, component specifications, assets, and acceptance criteria; review implemented interfaces and resolve usability and visual-quality issues before release.
  • Present design recommendations and tradeoffs to customers and leadership, maintain version-controlled design artifacts, and improve delivered products based on user feedback.
