About The Position

Headquartered in Vaughan, Ontario, Volatus supports clients across energy, public safety, infrastructure, and defense sectors, with operations in Canada, the United States, and international markets. The company is expanding and seeking a UAV (Remotely Piloted Aircraft - RPA) Safety Pilot – Test Site to join their operations team. The Safety Pilot (SP) will be a member of the flight crew, led by the Pilot in Command (PIC), and will be the primary point of contact for flight safety related occurrences or issues during flight operations. The successful candidate will be highly skilled in drone piloting.

Requirements

  • Transport Canada Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) Pilot Certificate – Advanced Operations
  • Experience flying RC multirotor RPAs in acro, attitude, and position flight modes
  • Restricted Operator Certificate - Aeronautical (ROC-A)
  • Knowledge of operating procedures and emergency procedures
  • Must be available: 40 hours / week
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs without assistance
  • Valid Class G Driver License in good standing and regular access to a personal vehicle required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience flying heavy multirotor RPAs – 50 kg or greater
  • Experience flying under an SFOC or special / specific authorization for complex operations
  • Transport Canada RPAS Pilot Certificate – Level 1 Complex Operations
  • Transport Canada RPAS Flight Reviewer – Advanced Operations and/or Level 1 Complex Operations
  • Customer-facing demo experience
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate

Responsibilities

  • Manually pilot the new and/or modified RPA via RC for quality assurance checks and to verify proper flight control/performance
  • Communicate clearly and reliably with the PIC and ground crew during flight operations
  • Maintain visual contact with the RPA and the surrounding airspace to detect conflicting traffic or hazards during flight operations
  • Perform take-over procedures and manually pilot the RPA via RC as required if advised by PIC or if safety issues arise during flight operations
  • Assist with the deployment and setup of the RPAS
  • Assist with the inspection and up to Level 2 maintenance (minor repair – i.e. swapping components) of the RPAS
  • Assist in developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and training manuals
  • Maintain site and operational area including landscaping and snow removal
