About The Position

Coefficient Giving is establishing a new U.S. AI Policy team, led by Caleb Watney, to shape the future governance of AI. This team aims to build institutional capacity, foster cross-partisan coalitions, and support organizations working on AI development. The team will manage significant grantmaking, seeding new organizations and initiatives. The roles are designed for individuals with technical substance, policy knowledge, policy entrepreneurship, or expertise in coalition-building and political economy. A Chief of Staff role is also available to support Caleb Watney's work across Public Policy sub-teams, focusing on project management, strategy, process improvement, and hiring. The organization is open to tailoring roles based on candidate experience and skills, seeking individuals motivated to drive positive change in U.S. AI policy.

Requirements

  • Technical fluency in AI capabilities and risks, with the ability to translate complex information for policymakers.
  • Policy entrepreneurship skills, including identifying organizations and ideas that need to exist and finding founders to build them.
  • Understanding of coalition-building and political economy, including how civil society coalitions form and shift.
  • Familiarity with the D.C. AI policy ecosystem.
  • Ownership and agency: taking full responsibility for loosely scoped projects and driving them forward.
  • Ambition and speed: generating creative, bold ideas and executing ambitious plans quickly.
  • Social awareness and flexibility: ability to communicate and build relationships across diverse professional contexts.
  • Good judgment: ability to identify and focus on important considerations, with good instincts for due diligence and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Identify the most important projects and organizations that need to exist, and make them happen.
  • Investigate grant opportunities by conducting focused, practical research projects.
  • Own special projects that go beyond grantmaking, such as incubating impactful projects, headhunting founders, and working with for-profit entities.
  • Design, implement, and advertise new grantmaking initiatives.
  • Conduct research to inform program strategy.
  • Build and maintain relationships in the field, ensuring feedback flows between the organization, grantees, and stakeholders.
  • Project manage large initiatives across Public Policy sub-teams.
  • Work closely with leadership to shape the strategy and structure of the Public Policy team.
  • Review internal processes to accelerate grantmaking and raise the ambition and impact of grantees.
  • Design and lead hiring rounds.
  • Potentially manage grantmakers and other staff at various levels of seniority.
