About The Position

The TV Producer is responsible for constructing and planning a daily newscast by organizing, writing, selecting, and making creative decisions for assigned live newscasts. This role involves determining story inclusion, duration, format, and order, as well as writing and rewriting content. The producer ensures all aspects of the newscast are complete before airing, including scripts, graphics, video lists, and timing. They are also responsible for updating online stories, posting to social media, and potentially shooting and editing video. Collaboration with newsroom staff, including reporters, anchors, photographers, and technical personnel, is crucial. The producer must be able to respond effectively to crisis and breaking news situations, handle last-minute changes, and communicate clearly and quickly. They are expected to write clear, accurate, and engaging stories, ensure visual relevance, and break down complex information. During live broadcasts, the producer makes immediate decisions regarding timing and communicates instructions to the control room staff and talent. Post-show duties include paperwork and archiving. The role also involves attending editorial meetings, contributing story ideas, staying informed about current events, and consulting with management on editorial issues. Travel is limited and only for special circumstances. The work schedule is established but may include overnights, early mornings, days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, with flexibility to fill in for other positions or shifts.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and speak English well.
  • Must be able to add and subtract time.
  • Able to work with others as part of a team.
  • Excellent organization and writing skills including grammar and spelling.
  • Understands when to take charge of situations when it is warranted.
  • Four-year Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism or communications or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Must be able and willing to work all newsroom shifts including overnights, weekends, evenings, early mornings and days.

Nice To Haves

  • Some experience producing a local television newscast preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Constructs and plans a daily newscast by organizing, writing, selecting, and making creative decisions for assigned live newscasts.
  • Determines which stories to include, their duration, format, and order.
  • Writes and rewrites stories as needed.
  • Ensures all aspects of the newscast are complete before airing, including scripts, graphics, video lists, and timing.
  • Enters information for story choices and stories into the newsroom computer system.
  • Notifies proper people of any changes or special situations in a timely manner.
  • Writes and posts stories to website and other media platforms.
  • Posts to social media and frequently updates online stories.
  • Shoots and edits videotape for broadcast as needed.
  • Communicates frequently throughout the shift and works collaboratively with others in the newsroom.
  • Relays story and newscast instructions and information via telephones, e-mails, faxes or other available ways.
  • Motivates staff before and during newscast.
  • Responds and works well in a crisis and during breaking news.
  • Handles last-minute and unexpected changes.
  • Communicates quickly and clearly to necessary staff and talent.
  • Writes clear, accurate, and interesting stories.
  • Ensures that any visuals shown are relevant, appropriate and impact.
  • Breaks down complicated and involved stories so that they are easy to understand.
  • Makes decisions about the timing of a live newscast as it is being broadcast.
  • Communicates changes to director, technical director, audio operator, graphics person, studio operators, videotape operator, master control operator, and anchors during live broadcasts.
  • Completes post-show paperwork and tasks including the technical trouble report and archiving.
  • Attends editorial and strategic meetings.
  • Contributes story ideas on a daily basis.
  • Is knowledgeable of local, national and world events and community happenings.
  • Consults with news director, executive producer and/or assistant news director on difficult editorial issues.
  • May travel on a very limited basis and in special circumstances.
  • Works established schedule, which may include overnights, early mornings, days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Fills in for others and other positions if needed on different shifts.
