About The Position

Reading Assist's Tutors to Teachers Delaware program, in collaboration with Wilmington University, offers an opportunity for participants to obtain a Master’s degree by committing to 5 years of services and education! Year 1 – Fellowship with Reading Assist-Americorps and WilmU Classes Year 2 – Teaching Residency & Classes – No Reading Assist or AmeriCorps Years 3 to 5 – You must teach in Delaware schools for 3 years This program allows Fellows to earn an M.Ed in Special Education and Delaware state licensure within two years . During the second year, Fellows engage in a school district teaching residency, receiving an extra stipend while gaining valuable teaching experience. Reading Assist Fellows are placed in elementary schools across Delaware, focusing on providing reading instruction to kindergarten through fifth-grade students who encounter significant reading difficulties. Our Fellows play a crucial role in teaching foundational reading skills to students who may struggle to learn through traditional classroom methods, making a lasting impact on the educational outcomes of young learners.

Requirements

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in any field with a 3.0 GPA
  • Apply and be accepted into the Wilmington University M.Ed. program
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Complete an AmeriCorps application and background check
  • Have a strong interest in literacy, education, and community service
  • Be open to working with children in kindergarten through fifth grade, including children who may have behavioral challenges in addition to academic needs
  • Own a computer (laptop/desktop/tablet) and respond promptly to communications
  • Portray resilience, adaptability, and a professional demeanor
  • Demonstrate openness to receiving feedback, patience, and flexibility in approach
  • Be proficient in teaching foundational reading concepts such as sound blending, segmenting, and word manipulation techniques
  • Have experience with Google Drive, Zoom, PowerPoint, and email communication tools
  • Exhibit willingness to commit to a full school year of service serving daily in schools as a tutor.

Responsibilities

  • Lead daily one-on-one or small group reading sessions in person lasting 30 minutes for up to 10-18 students.
  • Complete 900 service hours each year of the program, starting August 18, 2026, and ending in June 2027.
  • Participate in a comprehensive four-week, full-time, graduate-level initial training.
  • Develop personalized lesson plans tailored to individual student needs and monitor progress accordingly.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with a coach to receive guidance and feedback on performance.
  • Actively contribute to the AmeriCorps community by participating in training, events, and collaborative projects.
  • Coordinate closely with school staff, adhering to school schedules, including breaks and holidays.
  • Complete asynchronous courses for the M.Ed. program at Wilmington University and maintain 3.0 GPA throughout the program.
  • In their first year of classes, Fellows will spend at least 10 hours/week on their coursework and studies, separate to their Fellow responsibilities.
  • Participate in a school district teaching residency during the second year in the program.

Benefits

  • $1,000 in matching funding from Wilmington University for AmeriCorps service (to apply toward tuition/school debt) - available after 1 full year of continuous academic enrollment, and must have Education Award funds available.

  • $70.00 biweekly living allowance
  • $3,697.50 in Segal Education Award upon successful completion of 900 service hours as a part-time tutor
