About The Position

The Dr. Julia N. Visor Academic Center, a division of University College, aims to help students successfully transition to Illinois State University, achieve their educational goals, and realize their academic potential. This is accomplished through specialized communities, programs, and services such as facilitated study groups, writing assistance, learning workshops, and developmental and transitional courses. Content tutors provide weekly small-group tutoring for lower-level courses at Illinois State University. This application is for an applicant pool, and applications will be reviewed mid-semester or when staffing changes occur.

Requirements

  • Overall GPA of at least 2.80
  • A grade of A or high B is usually required in the course(s) in which the candidate is applying to tutor
  • Must be friendly, desire to be helpful, and be able to communicate effectively
  • Must be able to effectively communicate on a daily basis with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Required to submit two Tutor Reference forms
  • One reference form must be completed by a faculty member in the tutoring subject area
  • Subject to a criminal background investigation and, if applicable, an employment history review
  • Offer of employment is contingent upon passing a satisfactory criminal background investigation and/or an employment history review
  • All appointments are contingent upon proof of eligibility for employment at Illinois State University to perform the required duties on your scheduled start date
  • All new employees must file an I-9 in person no later than three days from the beginning of employment
  • Every employee must have a valid Social Security Number registered with the University at the time of employment and/or as soon after as possible, but no later than 45 days from the start date
  • Student employees are restricted to no more than 28 hours per week of on-campus employment for all positions held
  • International students are restricted by their visa status to no more than 20 hours per week of on-campus employment when the university is in session

  • Proficient in the area in which they desire to tutor and able to convey that knowledge clearly via the spoken and written word
  • Priority consideration will be given to those with a 3.00 GPA
  • Additional courses in the subject area applied for

Responsibilities

  • Provide small-group tutoring on a weekly basis for lower level courses at Illinois State University
  • Provide help tailored to each student's needs
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by graduate assistant supervisors and the Coordinator of Academic Support Services
  • Effectively communicate on a daily basis
