About The Position

The Dr. Julia N. Visor Academic Center, a division of University College at Illinois State University, aims to help students successfully transition, achieve educational goals, and realize academic potential in their first year and beyond. The center provides specialized communities, programs, and services including facilitated study groups, writing assistance, learning workshops, and developmental and transitional courses. Content tutors specifically provide small-group tutoring on a weekly basis for lower-level courses at Illinois State University. This application is for an applicant pool, and applications will be reviewed mid-semester when there is an increase in demand for a subject or should staffing changes occur.

Requirements

• Applicants must have an overall GPA of at least 2.80.
• A grade of A or high B is usually required in the course(s) in which the candidate is applying to tutor.
• Must be friendly.
• Must desire to be helpful.
• Must be able to communicate effectively.
• Proof of eligibility for employment at Illinois State University to perform the required duties.
• File an I-9 in person and no later than three days from the beginning of employment.
• Have a valid Social Security Number registered with the University at the time of employment and/or as soon after as possible, but no later than 45 days from the start date.

Nice To Haves

• Proficient in the area in which they desire to tutor.
• Able to convey knowledge clearly via the spoken and written word.
• 3.00 GPA (priority consideration).
• Additional courses in the subject area applied for.

Responsibilities

• Provide small-group tutoring on a weekly basis for lower level courses at Illinois State University.
• Provide help tailored to each student's needs.
• Communicate effectively.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by graduate assistant supervisors and the Coordinator of Academic Support Services.
