About The Position

The Dr. Julia N. Visor Academic Center, a division of University College, aims to support Illinois State University students in their academic transitions, goal achievement, and realization of academic potential. This is accomplished through specialized communities, programs, and services such as facilitated study groups, writing assistance, learning workshops, and developmental/transitional courses. Content tutors are responsible for providing small-group tutoring on a weekly basis for lower-level courses at Illinois State University. This application is for an applicant pool, and applications will be reviewed mid-semester or as staffing needs arise.

Requirements

• Applicants must have an overall GPA of at least 2.80
• A grade of A or high B is usually required in the course(s) in which the candidate is applying to tutor
• Must be friendly and desire to be helpful
• Must be able to communicate effectively
• Ability to effectively communicate on a daily basis
• Submission of two Tutor Reference forms, with one from a faculty member in the tutoring subject area
• Subject to a criminal background investigation and, if applicable, an employment history review
• Proof of eligibility for employment at Illinois State University to perform the required duties on the scheduled start date
• Possession of a valid Social Security Number registered with the University at the time of employment or no later than 45 days from the start date

Nice To Haves

• Proficiency in the area in which they desire to tutor and ability to convey that knowledge clearly via the spoken and written word
• 3.00 GPA for priority consideration
• Additional courses in the subject area applied for

Responsibilities

• Provide small-group tutoring on a weekly basis for lower level courses at Illinois State University
• Provide help tailored to each student's needs
• Perform other tasks as assigned by graduate assistant supervisors and the Coordinator of Academic Support Services
• Effectively communicate on a daily basis
