About The Position

The Tumor Registrar Assistant is responsible for assisting the Certified Tumor Registrar with maintaining the registry database according to American College of Surgeons (ACOS) and MHG standards, policies, and procedures. The role involves reporting data under the direction of the Certified Tumor Registrar, adhering to department and registry standards. Key duties include communicating information to care providers and committees, coding topography and morphology of registered tumor cases, submitting data to the National Cancer Database and State Central Registry, maintaining data request logs, and assisting with patient follow-up. The assistant also prepares and tracks staging form packets, provides administrative support to the Cancer Committee, and helps identify all cases of malignant disease. This role requires collecting, summarizing, and coding demographic and clinical oncology information from various sources, completing abstracts under CTR leadership, and recording patient updates in the cancer registry database. The position emphasizes teamwork, quality outcomes, customer satisfaction, and professional growth, while adhering to legal and ethical boundaries and safeguarding confidential information.

Requirements

  • High School or GED Graduate
  • Current student of an Associate Degree Program
  • Two (2) years of experience working in an oncology setting to include medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, or cancer registry (non - CTR position).

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Tumor Registrar training modules
  • Three (3) years of experience in a hospital/cancer registry, oncology, radiation, or pathology setting

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Certified Tumor Registrar with maintaining the registry database according to ACOS and MHG standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Reporting data according to department and registry standards and procedures under the direction of the Certified Tumor Registrar.
  • Communicating information to care providers, committees, and Certified Tumor Registrar(s).
  • Ensuring topography and morphology of registered tumor cases are appropriately coded and entered in the database.
  • Submitting data to the National Cancer Database and the State Central Registry.
  • Maintaining data request logs.
  • Assisting with patient follow-up by searching various databases and processing patient follow-up letters.
  • Preparing, sending, and tracking incoming and outgoing staging form packets.
  • Providing administrative support to the Cancer Committee.
  • Assisting in the identification of all cases of malignant disease from hospital departments, clinics, physician offices, and documenting in the suspense file.
  • Collecting, summarizing, and coding detailed demographic and clinical oncology information from a variety of internal and external (paper and electronic) data sources.
  • Completing abstracts under the leadership of the CTR.
  • Assisting with recording patient updates in the cancer registry database.
  • Participating as a member of the team to achieve business goals, quality outcomes, and customer satisfaction.
