About The Position

This role requires a licensed Tugboat Captain/Designated Duty Engineer who will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of tugboats. The position involves supervising deck hands, managing various ship systems, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The candidate must possess specialized knowledge of maritime conditions and strong leadership skills. The job may involve exposure to extreme weather and requires a variable work schedule.

Requirements

  • Licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard (U.S. Coast Guard License, Radar License).
  • A minimum of three years experience on tugboats is required prior to examination by U.S. Coast Guard.
  • Specialized knowledge of local winds, current tides reading, and weather and shipping hazards.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be able to supervise the work of deck hands, motivate and train these employees.
  • Possess strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Possess a thorough technical knowledge of the tug boats and Ship movement.
  • Have a solid educational base, generally gained through working as a Tug Boat Deck Hand or the equivalent in education and training.

  • Apprentice graduate is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the work of hourly deck hands, motivate and train these employees.
  • Possess strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Possess a thorough technical knowledge of the tug boats and ship movement.
  • Operate and monitor the main propulsion plant, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
  • Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing machinery and systems.
  • Manage electrical, sewage treatment, lube oil, bilge, and oily water separation systems.
  • Ensure proper fuel handling, storage, and lubrication of machinery.
  • Adhere to U.S. Coast Guard and STCW safety, pollution prevention, and watchkeeping standards.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records of engine-room operations and maintenance.
