About The Position

This position is responsible for assisting in picking up donations by riding in a Salvation Army truck and lifting, carrying, and/or hauling donations into the truck and unloading the same at the warehouse. The role also involves assisting the Truck Driver with navigation, ensuring the accountability, security, and safety of donations while in route, and assisting in maintaining the vehicle in proper working order and in compliance with established standards.

Requirements

  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
  • Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.
  • Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
  • Employees in this position must meet all DOT requirements for vehicles associated with this position at all times.
  • Six (6) months experience lifting and hauling heavy items such as appliances and furniture.
  • Valid State Driver's License.

Responsibilities

  • Rides in a Salvation Army truck on a scheduled route to pick-up donated items.
  • Assists in navigating driver to destinations by reading a map and/or hand-written directions.
  • Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures; explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted.
  • Lifts, carries, and/or hauls donations into truck; packs items in truck in a manner that maximizes use of space, protects items from damage, and ensures safety.
  • Prepares donation receipts for customers; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.
  • Maintains good relationship with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
  • Unloads donations from truck upon arrival at warehouse; distributes items to appropriate locations in the warehouse.
  • Loads the truck with items to be taken to the dump.
  • Delivers appliances and furniture purchased by customers.
  • Performs routine maintenance of the truck; checks fluid levels on a regular basis; coordinates and may participate in repair work as needed.
