About The Position

ServiceSource, a champion for people with disabilities and a qualified nonprofit agency operating within the AbilityOne program, is seeking a Truck Driver. This role is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of mail, packages, parcels, equipment, and various products from the Department of State (DoS) between government facilities, warehouses, and other designated locations in the National Capital Region (NCR). The position involves loading and unloading mail containers and equipment, manually or using mechanical aids, and ensuring all items are properly racked and validated before departure and at each delivery stop, following government-designated routes. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) required.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience working in related mail/distribution operations.
  • Top-Secret security clearance required.
  • Ability to obtain a Department of Transportation (DOT) card to safely operate vehicles.
  • Must have a valid U.S. Driver’s License and a clean driving record.
  • Possess driving knowledge of roadways throughout the NCR (Washington, DC, Virginia, and Maryland) with excellent proficiency on routes required for pick-up and delivery destinations.
  • Maintain detailed vehicle logs and support daily transport operations.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of USPS products, rules and regulations, and experience with commercial carriers, i.e. UPS, FedEx, DHL shipping services and software.
  • Experience operating a high-volume postage meter.
  • Must meet the DOT physical fitness requirements and take the physical exam every two years.
  • Maintaining logs, reports, and 100% accountability for PII and classified materials.
  • Ability to perform routine tasks on special class mail as well as routine and repetitive tasks for long periods with minimum supervision.
  • Must be able to stand, reach, and walk for long periods of time.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government issued security clearance.
  • Ability to make minor decisions regarding mail issues/questions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Good reading and writing skills and ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers, multiply, and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Basic ability to operate a computer using Microsoft Office software and accountable mail tracking system.
  • Basic typing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, classifies, reconciles, interprets, consolidates, and/or summarizes documents and information utilizing standard office equipment.
  • Processes, sorts, tracks, and delivers all incoming and outgoing mail and shipments using the DoS system of record.
  • Transports incoming and outgoing mail and materials on assigned routes throughout the NCR following established schedules and procedures.
  • Maintains vehicle inspection records for potential DOT stops.
  • Completes all trip reports and ensures miles per trip/log are updated at all times.
  • Interfaces with customers or company employees outside the immediate work area to give or exchange information.
  • Manages cargo by securing and locking to prevent damage.
  • Reports major mechanical issues to designated maintenance personnel.
  • Racks and validates mail prior to departure, estimating the load.
  • Manually or mechanically loads containers and other equipment onto vehicles at each designated dock.
  • Navigates routes with knowledge and data of roads and traffic conditions.
  • Picks up and transports Classified Mail from various locations in VA and DC.
  • Conducts routine mechanical and safety checks to keep the vehicle in proper working order, including basic maintenance tasks such as adding fuel, oil, and coolant.
  • Performs driving responsibilities throughout the National Capital Region (NCR).
  • Safely operates, inspects, and documents vehicle usage while ensuring compliance with all DoS safety and accountability requirements.
  • Follows HAZMAT procedures for handling potentially hazardous mail.
  • May require opening and reading mail and forwarding to appropriate locations.
  • Provides professional customer service and timely communication to employees and customers.
  • Organizes incoming deliveries to fit into the van or box truck and prepares outbound mail for the return trip.
  • Communicates with SSI lead supervisor to report road incidents, schedule pickups, and confirm delivery requirements.
  • Maintains accurate records, logs, related to mail operations, metered mail, and daily activities.
  • Adjusts delivery paths to accommodate emergency needs or facilitate more timely arrivals – route organization.
  • May be required to stay in vehicle to safeguard classified mail on board truck.
  • Performs other responsibilities as assigned.
