About The Position

The City of Chattanooga is seeking a Truck Driver for Sewer Maintenance. This role is crucial for the upkeep of the city's Wastewater Plant at Moccasin Bend, involving the safe removal and transportation of contaminants, grit, and wastewater trash from screenings and compactors. The driver will operate heavy vehicles over public roads and worksites, adhering to traffic laws and safety guidelines. Responsibilities include driving tandem and tri-axle dump trucks, various dumpster trucks, inspecting and performing light maintenance on equipment, and assisting with basic labor tasks. The position also requires the use of electronic devices for work tracking and may involve training new drivers. This is an essential position during inclement weather.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One (1) year of any combination of relevant education, experience, and/or training sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of this job; or any combination of equivalent experience and education.
  • Valid Class A, Class A restricted or Class B commercial driver license (CDL)
  • Appropriate license endorsement(s) related to the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of general equipment and maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment utilized in the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive and operate assigned equipment.
  • Ability to operate commercial vehicles that consist of self-contained specialized equipment.
  • Ability to use electronic devices to receive and track work.
  • Customer service centered, focused, and able to recognize or resolve customer needs according to departmental practices.

Responsibilities

  • Operate various equipment and vehicles for the maintenance and upkeep of the city Wastewater Plant, including grounds, property, utilities, and infrastructure.
  • Safely remove, drain, and haul contaminants, grit, and wastewater trash from screenings and compactors to sanitary landfills over public highways.
  • Drive heavy vehicles over public roads, worksites, rights-of-way, public works facilities, and other city property, maneuvering in traffic and around obstacles.
  • Obey all traffic laws and safety guidelines, monitoring the environment to ensure the safety of operators, workers, equipment, and the public.
  • Drive tandem and tri-axle dump trucks to transport and haul materials between destinations for sanitary disposal.
  • Position vehicles for efficient loading or dumping and secure loads to prevent spillage.
  • Operate dumping mechanisms to dump materials at appropriate locations.
  • Drive multiple types of Dumpster Trucks to pick up and haul various sizes and types of dumpster buckets.
  • Inspect and prepare equipment for safe operation, perform light maintenance (refueling, refilling lubricants), and clean vehicles and equipment daily.
  • Perform basic and semi-skilled labor to assist in maintenance, upkeep, and construction projects, including picking up debris and using hand and motorized tools.
  • Use cell phones, other devices, and/or two-way radios as required.
  • Meet regular attendance requirements and maintain good interpersonal relationships.
  • Accomplish essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • May be assigned or reassigned to any division within the department.
  • May perform other related duties as required.
  • Train new drivers in the use of Commercial Vehicles.
  • Fill-in and cover early hours for Scaling Trucks in and out of Plant, as needed.
  • Utilize knowledge of GSI mapping system and document daily records.
  • Perform traffic control.
  • Supervise up to two people.
