About The Position

The Facilities Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking a Truck Driver to perform on- and off-site pickups and deliveries of materials, goods, and equipment. Reporting to the Transportation Supervisor, the role provides customer service to Laboratory divisions, DOE facilities, UC Berkeley, and other Bay Area locations. Duties involve operating forklifts and vehicles including medium-sized package vans and liftgate trucks.

Requirements

• Possess and maintain a Class B California Commercial Driver’s license, with hazmat and airbrake endorsements, and current medical card.
• Ability to comply with and maintain compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements and Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
• Knowledge of applicable State and Federal vehicle codes and transport laws governing the vehicle operated, load carried, and driver responsibilities.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the rules of safe driving and the provisions of the State of California Vehicle Code pertaining to operation of vehicles described in the appropriate class (a 2-axle vehicle).
• Demonstrated experience and ability to operate medium size package vans, liftgate trucks (2-axle vehicles), and forklifts (5 tons maximum weight capacity) and obtain forklift operator certification upon hire.
• Ability to load and unload materials of varying types and sizes utilizing a forklift (if necessary) having a carrying capacity of up to five tons.
• Demonstrated ability to operate specified vehicles in unusual traffic conditions, including hilly terrain, narrow roadways, backing, etc.
• Demonstrated experience with cargo handling and documentation procedures.
• Expertise in all areas of equipment tie down and proper weight distribution.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in pre-trip preparation and vehicle inspection procedures.
• Strong organizational skills; ability to work independently or in teams on assignments, develop own work methods and procedures, use initiative and judgment, and make decisions within scope of work.
• Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and willingness to work in a flexible, changing work environment.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact effectively with team members and customers and to function well in a team environment.
• Able to follow processes, procedures, and policies.
• Ability to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to perform job duties involving pushing and pulling; climbing, stooping and crouching: reaching, handling and fingering: talking, hearing, and seeing.
• Ability to walk an average of 6,000 steps daily in the course of the work day.
• Basic knowledge of computers.
• Familiarity with LBNL safety/DOT standards, Property Management, and iBox systems.
• Experience securing and tying down equipment loads.

Responsibilities

• Sort, stage, and distribute packages processed through Central Receiving, including refrigerated items, sensitive property, supplies, electronics, instruments, and mail.
• Perform medium- and heavy-duty hauling of large and high-value materials, using package vans, forklifts, lift-gate and flatbed trucks, and other material-handling equipment.
• Safely load, unload, stabilize, strap, and secure all cargo.
• Perform on- and off-site pickups and deliveries at LBNL, LLNL, JBEI, Potter Street, Richmond Warehouse, and other Bay Area locations.
• Assess road conditions and follow safe driving and material-handling practices.
• Comply with DOT, state, LBNL, Facilities, and EHS policies and regulations, including hazardous-material transportation requirements.
• Scan package barcodes at pickup and delivery, capture delivery photos, obtain required signatures, and maintain accurate tracking records using I-Box.
• Ensure required shipping, property, hazardous-material, and material-movement documentation accompanies all deliveries.
• Conduct daily vehicle inspections; report defects, damage, maintenance needs, accidents, hazards, injuries, and material loss immediately.
• Maintain vehicles, equipment, cell phones, hand-held devices, and dock areas in clean, safe, and operational condition.
• Complete required accident/incident reports and maintain all required training.
