About The Position

The Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor has three (3) openings for Trial Preparation Assistants (i.e, Paralegals) within its Trial Division Unit. Trial Preparation Assistants provide a full-range of administrative support to the Assistant District Attorneys performing complex legal work.

Requirements

  • Excellent organization, communication, writing and problem solving skills.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to follow directions and apply proper policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Must be able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Knowledgeable about e-discovery procedures.
  • Comfortable with interviewing witnesses when deemed necessary.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access); editing, re-dacting and converting documents in Adobe and experience using Lexis/Nexis and Westlaw applications.
  • Must have strong attention to detail and a high concern for data accuracy.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required for this position.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field of study with a minimum of one year of legal work experience required; or approved certificate in Paralegal Studies with extensive legal work experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Fluency in a foreign language is helpful but not necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate and acquire documents from other government agencies such as: NYPD, Department of Justice and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
  • Ability to work independently, manage deadlines and adapt to changes in workflow processes.
  • Coordinate case schedules with courts, law enforcement officials, witnesses and defense attorneys.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff, court and law enforcement representatives and witnesses.
  • Compile, analyze, redact and reproduce case documents.
  • Draft legal documents such as subpoenas and Orders to Produce.
  • Accurately perform legal research.
  • Secure, listen to and transcribe phone calls from the Department of Corrections.
  • Maintain electronic files and databases in an accurate manner.
  • Prepare court calendars in a timely manner.
  • Travel outside the office to other locations and agencies, when required.
  • Perform related administrative and clerical tasks.
